Small world. I know Jon Van and used to work at Van L Speakerworks on Western Ave in Chicago, though I'm not familiar with the speakers in your photo.

Re: Clarity of Sound

Thanks for you compliment mrhp. The shelves are 2" thick maple butcher block. The design of the rack allows the shelves to recess between the horizontal frame members. I cut the top shelf larger above with a smaller section to recess into the rack for a future turntable. You can purchase real maple ...

Re: Clarity of Sound

Just a little equipment update. Sold the Mac tuner, so no need to use the preamp with only one source. I'm using the CDP's variable analogue outputs direct to the tube amp to the horn speakers. Better clarity, detail, and soundstage. I've had a similarly minimalist system twice before and always lik...

Re: Toymans new toys!

The Benchmark DAC is an SS design originally intended for studio/commercial use with a very clean house sound. There were 5 of us present for the 4 hour shootout and the general concensus was that the Benchmark was the cleanest one overall, almost to the point be sounding somewhat sterile on this h...

Re: Toymans new toys!

I've been looking at one of these, good reviews and the price isn't bad for brand new: http://shop.grantfidelity.com/Grant-Fidelity-TubeDAC-11-D-A-Converter.html I have both the DAC 11 and the DAC 09, both among the first units shipped and can vouch that the 2 are in completely different classes. T...

Re: Toymans new toys!

I've always liked the Paragon Studio 20s ever since they were first released. They offer a lot of quality sound for the money. Nice find.

Re: 490t tube change time??

My tube experience as a generality are this. Choose a tube to compliment your cdps weaknesses. ElectroHarmonix - superb frequency extension, detailed, hard. RCA - detailed, 3D, lean, extended highs. Tungsol - warm, full bodied. Sovtek - clean, tight bass, low noise. Telefunkin - warm, lush. Sylvania...

Re: Clarity of Sound

Here is what the new arrangement looks like taken this morning while the morning sun was filtered through the blinds. (The low angle makes the stump looks like it obstructs the sound but it doesn't. The other JPG photos would not be recognized for some reason. I'm sure you get the idea of the small ...

Re: Clarity of Sound

I just re-did the 11' x 13' room so the Altecs are in the corners of the 11' side. Now the Altecs are farther apart and I can now sit 13' away too. Much better sound, better soundstage, and fuller sound w/ less brightness. *5*

Re: Clarity of Sound

I have been using the newly purchased vintage Sony ES player for a few days now. It has really smoothed out in the top end and the soundstage has opened up and is really 3d. This is a nice improvement to my system. These Sony ESD players were an all out attempt by Sony to produce great cdps, and bes...

Re: Clarity of Sound

I have another change to the system. I picked up a vintage 1989 Sony ES cdp with remote from GW. It is a 5 disc model C8ESD w/ true variable analogue output (not variable digital controlled like the Yamaha), as well as digital optical out if I go the external DAC route. It is a substantial improveme...

Re: Clarity of Sound

Sorry about the late reply. Thanks everyone. I'm lovin' the sound of this system. There is something special about the sound. The Altecs attribute to it's spectacular sound for sure. A cdp upgrade would be in order sometime, but the Yamaha is quite good. The rack is an Target Audio rack from England...

Clarity of Sound

I had a lot for gear and put it all up for sale to thin in out and pay bills. The Carver receiver and AR speakers sold first so my music system is different w/o Carver. (If I come across another Carver Receiver 900 at a price I can afford, I would not hesitate to purchase it for the bedroom.) Mac c3...

Re: My First Carver

The SEAS FRoy mk3 speakers are an excellent speaker, definitely much better than the cost of materials to build them if your a DIY person. I've powered them with high-end amps like Pass Labs, Classe, AES (Cary), and Linn and they have brought out excellent inner detail, deep soundstage, lifelike and...

Re: My First Carver

Welcome, Love the Altecs.. Thanks tinpan. I looked over your equipment list and I'm quite impressed. No wonder you like my Altecs considering you have Voice of the Theater A-7s. And I'm impressed with all of your Audio Note products. They'd make quite a desirable system and you must have used them ...
