Re: sda 390t repair

Hi Gunnar, A late reply, but better late than never I guess. The SDA-390t is a Denon machine with the added tubes. That means that this unit uses a standard Sony KSS-240A head and Sony transport. It is one of the most reliable machines on the market. Adcom used the same system but changed more in th...

Re: Problem with M-500

Hi zumbini, Your amp is well worth repairing, never doubt that. Make sure the technician is good, not cheap! You may have other problems there, the amp should be checked out. Hi Bill, I have to comment that an amplifiers output must be linear with input level changes. If not, the amp will create dis...

Re: How to kill a Carver amp

Hi TNRabbit, Thanks for posting that. No excuses now people! Hi thall, You were lucky and had a good generator. Keep this up and the end will confirm the post I made - at your expense. Most Carver amps have long service lives, enjoy yours. BTW, I just tried some improvements on an M-500t, and it res...

Re: Soooooo.....I got "the call".......

Hi dyeraudio, Yes, a properly serviced amp does tend to sound better. There are lots of little things to look after in there that a tech normally simply does. As for the damping pot mod, I don't use any trimmers there anymore. Even the latest version will generate trouble later in time. I started us...

Re: All known Carver repair shops list is right here....

Hi All, Someone posted a concern about how shops are supposed to service Carver equipment without the original parts. I think that really deserves an answer as it seems to suggest that proper repairs are not possible otherwise. This would be incorrect. Most parts used in Carver equipment are standar...

Re: Carver C-19 Reference Tubed Pre-Amp blowing fuses

Hi Odysseous, Nice preamp. To blow the fuses, it must be a power supply fault. This is unusual since these are extremely reliable units. The tube does not see a very high voltage actually. I think it's around 60 volts or so, compared to the 120 ~ 350 VDC supply voltages common in most tube preamps. ...

Re: 6922 Tubes in the SD/A 490t......

Hi OBI56, You can clean the pins using WD-40 on a Q-Tip, spin the Q-Tip. After you've got them cleaned, follow with rubbing alcohol to get rid of the WD-40. It has a distinctive odor (as you know) you may not want to smell all day. Hi dyeraudio, The 6922 is a frame grid construction. It tends to be ...

Re: TFM-55x cuts out at low to moderate volume levels

Hi johnsearchwell, While playing at low volume, lightly tap the two relays at the rear of the PCB. Use a plastic object like a dry toothbrush. One relay is very close to the AC filter, careful you don't get a shock! Anyway, you may be able to get the sound to cut in and out. If that is the case, rep...

Hi 70chevelle, Look at the solder joints of all the transistors that mount to the heat sink. I'm going to bet you find some broken. Often the bias transistor will be intermittent and can cause this fault. It can also cause the outputs to fail short circuited. This was a very common fault under warra...

Hi, Just thought I'd throw a couple things into the mix here. F1nut, The engineer that finished everything was Vic Richardson. He made stuff work and was a very approachable person. There was more to do than "voicing". I'm not sure how the Lightstar II was configured, but the original one used down ...

That is a Carver product and is very close to the TFM-75. These are some of the best sounding amps to come out of Carver. Wonderful things. I can look after them in Canada, in the 'States you might want to have an ex-Carver service tech do the work. I understand that Carver didn't really have a serv...

It's odd you know ........... Japanese workmanship is excellent, better than most countries. Sorry, but it's true. It's too expensive to build in Japan these days. So your Japanese gear is first rate stuff. Some day, China will get their act together. I think they are already capable of building fir...

Hi bob p, Market pressures. EI cores have an air gap that reduces the tendency to saturate with any effective DC current. A toroid can not get rid of heat as easily as an EI core either. So, what do toroid types have going for them (aside from expense in manufacture)? They have the perception that t...

Hi, I thought I may as well mention that the Carver amps sounded better as they got more experience. The TFM-75 was one of the better sounding units. The Lightstar is good too. The later models (some "A" series) got less expensive to produce as they went away from chassis-cover and went to unit body...

Hi cerrelean, You may have a ground loop induced by your cable connection if you have one. You would need to disconnect everything that is connected to your cable in any way. The cure would be a ground isolator transformer. It breaks the ground connection with a 1:1 RF transformer. Buy a good one, t...
