Toymans new toys!

Post by 70chevelle » Thu Dec 29, 2011 8:51 pm

Here's pics of my recently and newly (today) updated system. First, I got my TFM45 and Sunfire Tube Pre back from Pgh Hifi for my main system. It sounds fan-freakin-tastic with the Vandy's. I went to my local shop today and low and behold, he had a pair of Paradigm Studio 20 v3's that he just took on trade. They are immaculate! I've been keeping my eyes open for a pair for my second system in my office. (CT6, SDA/360, M500) I can't believe the night and day difference between them and my 1982 Boston Acoustic A60 II's! I may have to try them in my main rig. OK, enough chit chat, here's some pics:

Best part is that I was looking for a pair of speaker for my weight room. Figured that the $400 I gave for the pristine 20's would be better than getting a small set to hang, especially since I had a pair of Paradigm Micro's in my Kitchen that are now getting moved to the weight room. The A60's are on top of the kitchen cabinets and all is well. A win, win, win in my mind!

TFM-45 plus Sunfire tube pre = as near to "tube sound heaven" as one can get without a true tube power amp....IMHO! Bet it sounds just as smooth as a babe's butt! Enjoy 70!

Hey! Thanks! I got to listen a while yesterday. I really like the 20's paired with the M500 and CT6, and it's fantastic in my office. Much better than the BA A60's. The 20's are very dynamic and I'm very impressed with the bass. I need to do some work on my stands and hopefully that will tighten up even more. Now I need to get a dac between that system and my computer. Just when I thought I was done spending money :^o

I've been looking at one of these, good reviews and the price isn't bad for brand new:

I've got the maverick dac with the NOS tube upgrade in my main and it's been very good. I did see that grant came out with the 11. I'm also thinking about the HRT music streamer or a squeezebox touch. Since I have the sunfire tube pre, I may move it to the office system and put whatever I buy in my main system.

And a few more toys!

Post by 70chevelle » Mon Jan 30, 2012 11:19 am

No pics yet, but they are on their way. With the last speaker re-arrangement I put my HR732 back in use for the tunes in my weight room, playing thru my Paradigm Micros in white. I hooked up my (useless) Toshiba HDDVD player as a source, but it's so freakin slow to open & play, along with being very finicky with the disk, that I've given up on it. Anyone interested? Willing to move it on for shipping costs. Anyway, since I needed a source, I ended up trying out a Pure20 Ipod dock & DAC. It's only backround music, but the better DAC does make a difference, rather than connecting the Ipods via headphone out to RCA's. It not only plays my lossless files nicely, but it also charges the Ipod and I found Pandora, which I can play thru my Ipod Touch while docked. I know the sound quality isn't on par with Vinyl, CD's or lossless files, but there's more music than one individual can (reasonably) attain. I also can see the albums and read history about the artist, which helps with future CD purchases. So I've created another useful system that sounds pretty damned good for it's use. I also finally broke down and ordered a HRT MusicstreamerII for my office system, so I can stream my Itunes thru the M500, CT6 and Paradigm Studio 20's. Simple install and it sounds great. I have to compare the HRT and the Maverick to see if there's a big difference. I still have to tackle my back porch this spring to add a pair of speakers mounted and connected to one of my systems.

I have both the DAC 11 and the DAC 09, both among the first units shipped and can vouch that the 2 are in completely different classes. Both units will benefit from tube rolling, the DAC 11 in particular steps up several notches by subbing the stock tube for a JAN Philips 6922 Green Label (about $30). This unit is dead-nuts quiet with both the stock, Mullard or JAN tubes but many of the NOS tubes I have tried, while sounding good, do introduce varying amounts of background noise into the unit; a major no-no in my book.

Hey Marc,

I have auditioned the 9 at home, heard some really good things about the 11.

I just happen to have the Jan 6922 greens sitting on the shelf.

Soooo.....You think the 11 is as good as I can do for the money?.....if so maybe its time for me to get one.

I've always liked the Paragon Studio 20s ever since they were first released. They offer a lot of quality sound for the money. Nice find.
