BillD's stuff

Awhile ago, Gary (TNRabbit) was in the Phoenix area, and we had a visit. At the time, my rig was crammed into a little room (10'x12'x10'). With all the reflections in that room, it was hard to get a proper setup without treating every surface. I decided that, when I could, I would move my gear into the living room, a room that was only used be the dogs for napping. When my wife retired at the beginning of September, it was time. She needed a sanctuary away from me (for my sanity and hers), and the perfect spot was where my rig had been. So, over the last 1½ months I've been slowly moving my gear. Here's the result.

The credenza is on rollers and is situated on a 4'x8' piece of melamine covered particle board. The speaks are of course my beloved AL-IIIs, bi-amped with four channels of a Sunfire 400~ seven.

On the right is my HD Radio, my Rane AC-22 (sans ears) and the Sunfire 400 ~ seven.

Re: BillD's stuff

Very nice setup, BillD. That's what I call "wired for sound".

I wish everyone would use this forum to document their system like this. It makes for a great point of reference.

Question: If I remember correctly from earlier posts, you have not removed the crossovers from your AL-IIIs. This being the case, doesn't one need to very careful to make sure that the AC-22 is set up to exactly match the HP and LP functions of the passives, or possibly risk a certain range of frequencies not reaching either driver? Seems like this would be difficult with the Ranes having a fixed slope and no way to de-link the HP and LP crossover frequencies. Or is this just being anal?
A point in every direction is the same as...no point at all.

Re: BillD's stuff

Harryfan — I took great care in matching the active crossover to the passive. Here's what I do (did). I generate a 150Hz test tone out of my computer, which is the crossover point. I start with the low end and measure the SPL as I increase the crossover point up. When it falls by 3dB, I stop. I do the reverse with the ribbon coming down. At the -3dB point, I'm usually within 1 click (stepped attenuators on the crossover frequency adjustment) of the position I was in with the bass. Then you adjust the separate gain controls so that the -3dB points are the same SPL, and it's dialed in.

I do the same with the subwoofer and the bass modules to get it dialed in at the crossover point, adjusting the phase control for maximum contribution from the sub, also.

Very nice!!! I love that "The front panel of the drawer is speaker cloth" where you have your center speaker, that is cool. One thing I did notice, where is your wifes chair? You don't have her locked in that "other room" do you? haha. just kidding.

Re: BillD's stuff

Actually, that chair was just there for my setting up the sound. A couch will replace it (actually already has). It does make a little bit of difference (it's very sound absorbent).

Very nice SH now, Gary. All those reflections in that small room made for almost no SH action before the move.
