Cartridge in depth info

Post by radioeng2 » Sat Feb 21, 2015 9:52 pm

One of the experts in cartridges has a lot of info in this long talk. Peter Ledermann of Soundsmith is one of the bright guys in the industry.

If your into TT playback, take time to grab a cup of coffee and set down and injest some of this info.

I got to hear a few years ago him demonstrating one of his unaffordable (to me) cartridges on the Scaena line source speakers. Very, very impressive.

Peter repaired my Lightstar. His Strain gage cartridge is the best I've ever heard.

Thanks Mark, good read(well, listen) Someone mentioned a TT/cartridge set up article that involved a 91-92(IIRC) degree angle setup spec required to align the needle properly in the groove. I don't recall it explaining why that was necessary. Now I know. And I heard a couple of clues that might help solve my tonearm/cart resonance problem.

Thanks for posting, a very interesting talk! Great speaker. I was disappointed that he didn't seem to have time to continue drilling into cartridge designs when he started skipping around in response to audience questions. I wish he would have left questions to the end but I guess that's the tradeoff with these kinds of talks and it seems like he enjoys engaging with folks. Will be interested to see if there are other recordings of his talks available.

It was interesting to hear his discussion on the strain-gauge cartridge design and history. 5 or 6 years ago I came across - through a local craigslist sale - one of the old Win Labs strain-gauge cartridges paired with a Phase Linear 8000 TT. I don't recall all the issues but the TT needed the usual work (cue'ing, etc) after years of storage.
