Record Clamps or Stabilizer Weights?

Post by SteveFord » Thu Oct 16, 2008 8:37 pm

Does anyone have experience with record clamps or the simple stabilizing weights that slip over the spindle?
Well Tempered Labs (the old company) makes a clamp but I can't get ahold of the fellow who carries the product.
The Sota I clamp may work with my turntable so would I be better off with that or just go with a stabilizer? Is there anything to worry about with the extra 14-16 ounces of the stabilizer weight putting a strain on the belt and motor?

BlueMDPicker has the best one I've ever seen; maybe he'll chime in....

I don't think you can see it in this pic: Image

Since the weight is close to the centre of the record, it should have a negligeable effect on both the motor and the belt (little ot no change in the total inertial mass). Where is will have an effect will be on the platter centre thurst bearing (so will a clamp BTW). I use the Alchemist stabilizer which works really well and is much lighter than the 14 to 16 ounce range you quoted. It has a spirit level on it which is great for acheiving perfect levelling of your TT, but the stroboscope ring is unfortunately only claibrated for 50Hz lighting, not our standard 60Hz.
Why let facts or common sense get in the way of your opinions.

The Well Tempered Clamp finally showed up - it's knurled, black anodized aluminum and threads into the spindle. Pretty clever.
Weighs 109.5 grams, 2.5" diameter if anyone's interested.

I used to have one of these vacuum platters: very nice, but I can't find them around anymore and all I have left is the manual.....
