Well it turns out it wasn't the tube falling apart, it was a different phono cartridge I was trying. Guess I better stick to one thing at a time.
So, here's where I'm at so far.
The Bendix 5852 that replaced the 6X5 is probably the baddest tube I have seen to date. This set up, my Lowther setup, has always been kicked back and kind of smooth and mellow. This system has the L2 Preamp and the 2.1 DAC where as the other system, Altec A5's. has the better L3, Dac 3.1 and phone stage, all signature versions. The Altec system has always been a notch above the Lowther system although none would ever tell me.
This Bendix tube elevates the whole system. I put one in the dac and the preamp, it takes about a minute to warm up. The sound is just there, the bass, the warm rich tones better detail. I am glad I got 6 of them.
Next up was the phono stage, it uses one 6DJ8 and one 12AX7. I am finding out these have to be critically clean sounding.
Originally I had a Westinghouse 6DJ8 that sounded very nice but had a little noise when you cranked it up a little and were changing records. Before you turn the volume back down. I tried a Bugle boy in there and it was really noisy, didn't sound good at all so it had to come out. Currently I have an Orange Globe Amperex in there and it sounds better but I;m not during I'm hearing the detail like I did before. I;m not sure what I had in there originally but it looks like I have some playing around still to do.
The 12AX7 that I pulled was a GE JAN12AX7WA and i am finding out I really like that tube a lot. Currently I have a Telefunken 12AX7 in there, not sure it has the detail the GE tube has. One thing I am finding out is I need really clean tubes for this section
The line stage had a pair of Philips JAN5814A and I replaced them with the RCA Clear tops, they seem a little warmer but I'm not sure they are as detailed.
I need to spend some time listening trying different combinations. Sometimes it seems like you take a step back before you can go forward again.
The other tube I rolled was in my DAC 2.1 it has an ECL82, the 6X5 , both in the power supply. I had a pair of cheap EH 6922's in there as well and tried the Bugle boys I pulled from the L2. Didn't like the sound at all. They were noisy and you could hear a cycle in them. They came out and the cheap EH's went back in for now.
