Interesting day yesterday. Sold the home-brew 300b and BBB Sn 200015. Plus some observations in general.
A tube noob wanted to try a tube amp. He sorted through all of the chinese offerings and vintage stuff and settled on the BBB I had listed on CL. After a long conversation I figured out he had a HK receiver that he could use for a pre amp so at least he had a way to play some music. I pointed him to the site, we'll see if he makes it. I found it interesting that he settled on this amp to test the waters, couldn't have made a better choice.
MR, my SET buddy / mentor was over buying back his home-brew, seems he couldn't let it get too far away. I showed him the BBB with his homebrew line stage running a pair of Snells K types) I got from him years ago for a ridiculous price. He couldn't believe the sound and couldn't remember selling those speakers to me ( and a pair of J types) especially for that crazy price. This combo sounds really nice and i haven't even begun the serious tube rolling yet. Currently I have the old stock Sovtek EL84's I got from ebay, previously posted above.
Lastly, we went to the garage to listen to the A4's. I made some changes to that system and wanted to get his impression. I replaced the ferrite 288 -8k driver with an Alnico 288-c driver and I replaced the Carver BBB with the AudioNotes Kit 1 amp. Changing the tube config from an EL84 push pull design to a true 300b SET set up. This AN amp on my A5's i just magic, it does everything right, s.w.33T mids, nice highs and the right bass.
On paper this should yield the results I want, however, he confirmed what I suspected. The bass was better with the Carver BBB amp and the overall detail was better. I have a pair of treasure 300b tubes in the AN amp. I may switch it back to a JJ's and see what that sounds like. It's not a bad sound, it's soft, I just have to spend some time with it and see if it's the right sound.
It's interesting that individually certain components are outstanding and certain combinations are to die for, but not always the way we want to see them. My Khorns don't like that 300b amp either.
