A line stage is a preamp without a phono section.

Some available EL84's....erotic versions?

http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=126349.0

"NOS matched quad of JAN Sylvania 6BQ5 with the dark shiny black plates with green lettering 90-90-91-87 in their original JAN boxes. Now $110 plus shipping

NOS quad of Sylvania 6BQ5 with the same shiny black plates with three having yellow print and one having green print; two in white boxes and two in the original yellow and black Sylvania boxes. Now $90 plus shipping.

NOS GE gray plate 6BQ5's in their original boxes. $40 plus shipping.

I will take $185 for BOTH quads of Sylvania black plate 6BQ5's plus shipping.

Re: Tube rolling the Baby Black Beauty or CF amps

Here is another option, a set of Siemens E84L relabeled RTC. These are 1960's production as far as I can tell by the date codes. I have two sets of these and sent one set to Tinpan to roll in while he plays with the 12AX7's. These should be really nice tubes at a very good price.

As Mark said...no affiliation, just passing along. These tubes are very similar to the ones I was running in my Baby Blacks at CF13.

Re: Tube rolling the Baby Black Beauty or CF amps

Interesting day yesterday. Sold the home-brew 300b and BBB Sn 200015. Plus some observations in general.

A tube noob wanted to try a tube amp. He sorted through all of the chinese offerings and vintage stuff and settled on the BBB I had listed on CL. After a long conversation I figured out he had a HK receiver that he could use for a pre amp so at least he had a way to play some music. I pointed him to the site, we'll see if he makes it. I found it interesting that he settled on this amp to test the waters, couldn't have made a better choice.

MR, my SET buddy / mentor was over buying back his home-brew, seems he couldn't let it get too far away. I showed him the BBB with his homebrew line stage running a pair of Snells K types) I got from him years ago for a ridiculous price. He couldn't believe the sound and couldn't remember selling those speakers to me ( and a pair of J types) especially for that crazy price. This combo sounds really nice and i haven't even begun the serious tube rolling yet. Currently I have the old stock Sovtek EL84's I got from ebay, previously posted above.

Lastly, we went to the garage to listen to the A4's. I made some changes to that system and wanted to get his impression. I replaced the ferrite 288 -8k driver with an Alnico 288-c driver and I replaced the Carver BBB with the AudioNotes Kit 1 amp. Changing the tube config from an EL84 push pull design to a true 300b SET set up. This AN amp on my A5's i just magic, it does everything right, s.w.33T mids, nice highs and the right bass.

On paper this should yield the results I want, however, he confirmed what I suspected. The bass was better with the Carver BBB amp and the overall detail was better. I have a pair of treasure 300b tubes in the AN amp. I may switch it back to a JJ's and see what that sounds like. It's not a bad sound, it's soft, I just have to spend some time with it and see if it's the right sound.

It's interesting that individually certain components are outstanding and certain combinations are to die for, but not always the way we want to see them. My Khorns don't like that 300b amp either.

Re: Tube rolling the Baby Black Beauty or CF amps

Thanks, MRHP, Can't wait to get the package.

Funny thing though, I decided I'm keeping the second BBB.

Do i regret the engineered trade with MRHP? No not at all, he is so happy with those serial numbers and they do deserve to stay in our little community. I don't think he'll be flipping them.

I do wish I could come up with another set of transformer covers for him though. It would be nice to put new ones on 0001. I've pinged Carver Corp and so far they haven't come up with any. Maybe someone better connected could get my request to Bob.

These look the same as CF amp- need to check measurements on BBB's-
http://www.ebay.com/itm/320966462240?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
3.307" x 3.149" x 3.385"- checked- these are same size as CF amp! :D

Vendor may have the larger one as well?

Dan and others,

If you want exactly matching for the BBB's covers, you may not be able to be picky. But a lot of the vendors in the Orient have similar covers in different sizes. And those linked are a bit higher in price than some. I'd say the average price I've seen to be around $15-20 or so.

Just trying to let you know what I've seen. Also do searches in eBay over the "Business" category. You should be able to come up with a bunch of them listed.

Eric,

You are a nut

I'm expecting a small box with a half a dozen tubes. I get a coffee can with 7 pairs of input tubes, a set of power tubes and a power cord.

Re: Tube rolling the Baby Black Beauty or CF amps

Might be partially resposible??? [-X I hold you fully accountable for this sickness

Tinpan those power tubes are nos they have never seen a socket so you might want to "run them in" overnight. I really dont know but they may be a little harsh at first.
I have a set just like them here and I put them in the amp with a set of cheapo 12ax7 china tubes and turn the amp on overnight, along with an hour on hour off cycle here and there. Mine alreay sound great.
Also a couple pins were very slightly bent and the tube would not easily go in the socket, after looking at the pins it was easy to tell which one was out of place and with a little pressure from the fingernail it was fixed.

I have also noticed like you that the Baby Black puts out incredible bass for such a small amp. Enjoy the tube rolling!
