Carver 305 Tube amp not enought juice????

Post by kingman » Mon Mar 30, 2015 7:55 pm

Saw an ad on Audiogon and seller said.....
Why are you selling them so soon?

A: Very simple... When I upgraded my system I moved from a Krell Solid State Amp and Focal speakers to Revel Ultimate Salon 2 Speakers, the Carver Amps, and a McIntosh Tube Preamp.. The Carver's, at 305W's per channel didn't have the juice to drive the Revel's which I was unaware of until do some deep researching.. My choice was to change speakers or go for more Watts.. I purchased two McIntosh MC 1.2K Mono blocks with 1200W now being fed to each Revel Speaker and the extra power made a big difference.. Could have changed the speakers but thought that would be much more expensive.. Hate to sell the Carver's since I always obsessed over Tube Amps of this Quality.. Such is Life..!!!

Read more at http://app.audiogon.com/listings/tube-b ... cSbKLHu.99..... Are the Revel's THAT hard to drive?????

There is a review of those speakers on Stereophile's site. They say they are 86db efficient. But from JA's measurements, he says not too demanding on power but that they might sound a little bright on tubes.

Also, from scanning the reviewer comments it sounds to me like that can handle just a ton of power and sound great. Heck, the reviewer said he had great sound right up until the breakers pulled...so they can take power!

So without compression holding back levels, a real clean output and let's guess (due to cost associated with both the speakers and the amps) a big room, I could see where in comparison one of the real stiff SS might work well.

I'm guessing when you get into speakers well into 5 figures ($22K) that the rules are different than mine.

Some speakers, though they can be driven with less, come alive with a ton of watts.

I understand that a lot of speakers need watts but 305 TUBE watts ain't enough???? That's baffling..... :?

Maybe it's because Bob intentionally designs his tube amps with a relatively high output impedance, whereas that McIntosh has a conventionally high one. The Revels are a little low in nominal impedance, so you're looking at a difference between effective damping factors of 4 and 40. That should definitely be audible, especially the crazier the cables and crossover design. Those Revels are 4-way and ported, so their impedance plot is pretty wavy.

That's my guess, anyhow. Maybe he just thought the Mc looked prettier? :?
