Platinum Speaker Models

Post by sea » Sat Feb 03, 2018 9:31 am

I have a lead on a pair of Platinums or at least that is what the buyer is calling them. One ribbon is pretty much destroyed so I can get them cheap. They have one pair of binding posts. The owner says he does not remember what the woofers look like since he has not taken them apart or used them in like 20 years.

My question is did all factory Platinum models with the 60 inch ribbon have dual posts for biamping other than the Mark IV? I am afraid that these might be hybrids that had a crossover upgrade and ribbon upgrade from Carver.

Pretty sure some had single, and some dual; not sure of dates. It's a very easy changeover.

If it's an upgraded Original pair, it would have had the flat Chungtai 'honeycomb' woofers, which are probably at least as good as the T- type that Plats had, and seemed to last longer, as well. Other than that, the upgrades essentially were Plats - same crossover, same 60'' ribbons, same enclosure, but with the woofers rewired - the flat woofers were 4 ohms and the later type are 16.

My ALS Originals w/60" ribbons have single binding posts. The crossover can be split to make them bi-ampable. The bass note is good with mine even though the distance from the back wall is not ideal.

Thank you for the replys. They are so cheap I am going to pick them up. The two ribbons are worth the asking pride.
