Carver silvers

Post by Drmark23 » Wed Aug 14, 2019 6:28 pm

Are the silvers designed for the back wall to utilize the woofers or should the back wall have sound absorbing material thanks for any help

A dipole radiation speaker heavily counts on the sound from the back wall as part of what it does.

I have read a lot of times about how Magne pans and electrostatics should be carefully spaced away from the wall while listening to the resulting soundstage. I would image the big ribbon would be exactly the same. Though I have never had the chance to play with one. The spacing number seems to always be said as 'at least 3 feet away'.

Let me know what it does for you. I'm curious.

They do benefit from moving them away from the back and side walls but it's not totally necessary. You get a deeper bass note and a bit better imaging with the speakers away from the walls. I don't think that bass traps are necessary I think that a reflective back wall can help make the sound feel more like a live performance.

Thank you both, that was my thinking but I wanted some expert opinions. I’ll be listening to them a lot as I recover from my surgery so I’ll want to fine tune them before that. Now if I could only teach my dog Maxwell how to change cds. 🐶🙃🎼🎧🎷🎻🎹

What are your room dimensions? If you'll post some dimensions we can help you figure out a good place to start for them. My platinums are only about 24" from the back wall, and just a few inches from the side walls at the base but they still sound great.

Where is your listening position? Opposite end of room or somewhere between? With the speakers about 2" wide at the base, and 4' away from each wall, does that mean the ribbons are only about 4' apart from each other? If so I would start by moving the speakers to 2' from side wall and 4' from back wall. That would give you 8' apart in the middle for better image, and better bass note.
