Re: *~Gone Active~*

A graphic EQ has set bands; these Rane parametric EQs have a constantly variable pot that lets you specify exactly which frequency to boost or cut & how wide or narrow you want the affected area to be

thats what I thought..... :-k :-k :-k

thanks....

You know...it's kinda like being given the keys to a new Corvette, then being told you can't use full throttle or rev past 3,000 rpm for the first 1,000 miles during break-in~

Not sure what I mean by "faster", but that's the only term I can come up with to describe it~

On an unrelated note, this will soon occupy a spot over the top of my stack:

Hope you very much enjoy the active experience. I did this with a pair of two-way Magnepan's and just could not believe how much better it was. It really did sound like the amplifiers had gotten a hold of the drivers for the first time. I cannot think of an aspect that did not improve. Dynamics, detail, imaging and no more power dissapated by the crossovers. What was not to like about that?

Ribbons may be the best driver for a direct connection in an active config. As long as the resistance is high enough for the amplifier then the other parameters are just about perfect for this arrangement. The inductive & capacitive influences are so low that they may be pretty much ignored. I expect that the Carver ribbon is very well behaved in frequency response and that the differences are more from the line souce behavior (comb filtering) rather than reactance and resonance. But I haven't really spent any time sizing those up and may be unaware of anything that may need to be compensated for. Having said that... the AL-III is a speaker that I have been seriously considering trying this with. I may have missed a time frame that I can find a good set of those but the fact that the ribbon can handle everything from around 250 Hz on up is a very worthwhile thing to have. That eliminates any need to crossover to a tweeter. Which is the best kind of crossover you can have to begin with... none at all. "We don't need no stinking crossover"

Good luck and hope you really enjoy this.

Re: *~Gone Active~*

Got the Rane PE-15 EQs into place with judicious appplications of MORE XLR balanced cables...what a mess of cabling behind my unit:

Image

At first, the Ranes exhibited an INCREDIBLE amount of noise; I mean I was almost ready to take them out & forget this entire project, it was so bad. After they had a chance to warm up & I worked the scratchiness out of the pots & bypass switches, things got a LOT better. I'm going to have to pull them & liberally apply De-Oxit to everything....I think that will clear things up considerably.

I am REALLY liking the whole active route, a LOT. I highly recommend it.

Special thanks to mbskeam (Mike) who is building me a custom pair of stainless steel cover plates to replace the original crossover plates on the back of my AL-IIIs. \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/
As far as I'm concerned this is going ABOVE & BEYOND what anyone could realistically ask for. =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

So, here's what the entire mess looks like now; sorry about the crappy pictures:

I'm going to be looking for a way to pack this all away in a rack as it's getting a little TALL for the desk....that's my next project~

Re: *~Gone Active~*

I ordered new binding posts & fuse holders to go with the new panels Mike is making for me. Binding posts are the same ones BillD has used, from Parts Express:

Image

The fuse holders are the knurled-knob type vice screwdriver-removable ones currently in place (although I ordered a new set of those as well, just in case). However, I also bought a set of 3 amp circuit breakers to try out:

Push Button 3A Circuit Breaker
Philmore # B7003
Same as GC 35-2103

* Maximum DC Voltage: 50 VDC
* Maximum AC Voltage: 250 VAC
* Mounting Hole: .500"
* Push to Reset
* .250" Quick Connect
