AL=III's vs Silvers

I just aquired a set of silvers in oak , and when I tested them a home against my AL-III's they seem to have a different sound.
This is with low freq's bypassed on both sets of speakers.
From what I understand the silvers use the same ribbon as the AL=III's, is this true?
Thanks Brian

They both use the same ribbon. The sound is similar but different.
In reality, it only matters what it sounds like to YOU!!!

I loved the Silvers I had.. The AL-III's are still growing on me. Really need a sub(s) to get them to sound good IMO.

Re: AL=III's vs Silvers

To me, the AL-IIIs image better, I believe due to the narrower baffle and the taller placement of the ribbon.

But the bass is more balanced with the Silvers. I think the best option would be to take a saw and cut down between the woofers and the ribbons in the silvers and place the ribbon/woofer panels independently....

Re: AL=III's vs Silvers

The crossover is different in each design. The constant tweaking that Carver did produced a lot of variations. My ribbons are yellow in my Silvers. Imaging and Soundstage is great with both my AL IIIs and Silvers given good recordings. With Bella Fleck's Cosmic Hippo you can easily hear how much bass is coming out of the ribbon! With BASS imaging! Way cool.

Re: AL=III's vs Silvers

Since the ribbons cross over at 100-200 Hz, the wavelengths at those frequencies are 5-10 feet. With the Silvers, that's not too far from the baffle dimensions, but the ALS-III is an order of magnitude narrower. So I'd expect a big difference in responses from rear cancellations alone.

It might be fun to play with diffraction: fan some cardboard to approximate the Silver baffles, an tape them around the ALS-III ribbon appropriately. Does it sound more like a Silver now?

BTW, I'm jealous that you have both to compare! =P~
