ribbon phasing

Post by mbskeam » Thu Oct 07, 2010 3:30 pm

juat a ?????
so how do you tell what the phase is on a ribbon?

unlike a cone speaker these are not really marked with a plus/minus on the hook up points
or does it have to do with the magnets on the frame body?
not sure if this has been asked before.....

Taken from the original Thiele - Small Parameters I have:
Electrical polarity: A positive voltage applied on the red terminal produces forward cone motion.

If you don't have the wires still soldered to the ribbon, let me know, I can post a picture of which is positive, and negative.

In all cases this is done with the ribbon standing up with the red and black wires at the BOTTOM just like they will be when put back on a panel.

Looking from the front of the ribbon the red lead goes on left side of the ribbon the black goes to the hole that is on the right side((((THE HOLE CLOSEST TO THE CENTER OF THE CIRCURTBOARD)))))).

This goes for ALL ribbons no matter 48" or 60" left side speaker or right ALL are wired the same.

30 " looking at the front the red wire goes on the left terminal black on the right ALL THE TIME for both left and right speakers.

Looking at the back of a ribbon the red wire will go to the right, JUST REMEMBER THE BLACK WIRE GOES TO THE CENTER OF THE BOARD.

thanks I did not know that......

have a set of al3 that sound funny when I test with a cd that checks the in phase/out of phase....
the silvers sound good, but the 3's just sound funny.....
last week I tried moving the speaker hook ups around but it just did not sound right, got worse.
but did not show the same center that the silver do, when the in phase voice is played.....
will check when I get home.....

doing the the original ribbons and amazing subs this weekend.
going to use the CO from the plats for the subs and the CO from the originals for the ribbons.....
going to leave them in one piece and just mount them both on the back using the parts that I need.....
