woofer damping

Post by mbskeam » Wed Feb 09, 2011 11:18 pm

for a while now I have been hearing a buzz/rattle coming from the speaker, I thought it was my sat receiver, I kinda just ignored it......
found a tract on a cd that was long enough that I could play and get the buzz to come back, while I probed around....
it turned out to be the woofer baskets that made this noise, and one of the metal rings that attach to the frame.
so I got some Duct seal from home depot, 1.97$ per stick.
it is a mastic putty like material, it sticks to metal real nice.
I figured 1 stick for each woofer.
on the replacement woofers on the basket and magnet attach ring are different.
not as wide, this lets the magnet assy vibrate a bit more. plus the step in the oem woofer sheet metal helps to stiffen the basket.....

after putting the material on it made the ringing go away and now the baskets are real dead sounding, when I play music and you place a hand on the magnet, you can feel that about 80% of the vibration is gone..... \:D/ ,
best of all the buzz is gone..... :D :D :D :D

Two words, Dynamat Extreme.
Political Correctness...defined

A doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Mike,

Thanks for the post. Both interesting and innovative!

you should ask her..... :-" :-" :-"

let us know how that works out for ya.....

You stated in the past that these sound diffrent, I think so also...
not bad, just diffrent from the OEM woofers
will try and do a good listen today....
have only the LT side done, now I can really hear the sound of the woofers making noise on the Rt.
but the LT is real quit now....
the other thing I found is the speaker frame has a tone of its own also,
try and just tap on the top woofer mag and work your way down, you will hear this thing resonate....
more duct seal.....
hidden of course, so as to not be ugly.... :D :D :D

Both interesting and innovative!
I was applying Dynamat Extreme to those stamped steel baskets years ago. Pics are somewhere in here. Tip: you do not need to cover every square inch, a little goes a long way.
