It is a dark grey rubber like substance that looks like it was glued, or was perhaps a single sided tape stuck to the base plate under the speaker. It sits between the base and the floor.

Actually now that I think about it the rubber piece and the counter sunk rear post holes would work in concert to increase the backward tilt of the speaker.
