looking at some amazings, questions.......

looking at these amazings, what model are these & what should I look for as far as problems? I asked if ribbons had any buzz or woofer surrounds were falling apart & he said no, they sound great!! what are these really worth? have to look at them for this money plus only about 20 miles away!! any suggestions would be great!! dont want 2 big bookends!! thanks!! http://appleton.craigslist.org/ele/3275606899.html

They look like ALS Silvers (three 12" woofers, 48" ribbon). If all is well, that is an excellent price for them. Be sure to remove the covers to inspect the surrounds...

As Wrabbit mentioned, if original surrounds, it is time for replacement. I think there is a recent post where they are on sale for $29 a piece from Dynavox. Someone will chime in I am sure with a link.

Just a note; I've seen many surrounds that LOOKED good but when a healthy dose of bass was applied, they disintegrated!

that aside, do inspect them and dump some base to them.....
also piano will make the ribbons buzz if the ribbon is sloppy.

looked at amazings tonight & they look to be in good shape but heres a stupid question, how the hell do the grills come off so you can look at woofer surrounds?? owner would not let me pry on them with anything so I just offered him 200 bucks & he said he would let me know, said someone was coming to look at them friday but think he was blowing smoke up my ass as it is only tuesday! & its craigslist so about 25% of those that say they are coming over actually do !! he was driving them with a shitty receiver so couldnt tell much, seemed like most of sound was coming out of ribbon area? anyways if I get back over there how do the grills come off?? didnt see any serial #? where is that located? they are 60" ribbons, seems like he wants closer to 400 but if they need new woofer is it worth that? you guys let me know please! thanks

If 60" ribbon, they are Platinums. Ribbons alone if in good shape are worth $400.

You have to remove the screws that hold the rear cover on, then screws that hold the front cover on. There is no "prying"~

The grills are screwed on from the back and are kind of a pain in the ass.

Especially the bottom screw. You have to lay on the floor to see it.

They are phillips head screws.

I have a set. I bought them for $350.00 with bad woofers. Well worth it.

I have no interest in any other speakers.

If you get my drift...you will love them when properly set up & driven with enough power.

They do love power.

I missed you & Melody at the fest. Looking forward to next year.

Everything above is still true.

if you look at the back you will see 6 screws that hold the front grill on, they come off real easy.
one person on the front to help hold them and the other person to unscrew them.
since the seller does not want you to see the woofers, my guess is the surrounds are bad and he knows it....

on all the sets I have looked at, the sellers all let me look, they had nothing to hide.

Grab them regardless...

I got my pair for $250, and the surrounds did disintegrate quickly.

I just received 6 drivers from Dynavox yesterday! Still on sale @ $29 each w/ free shipping!

The screws on Platinums are square drive screws, not phillips (sorry Frankie). A phillips will work, but will damage the screws if done too often.

If these speakers are the ones in the picture, I think they're silvers because the ribbons have 8 sections. I always thought Plats had 10 sections to the 60" ribbons. Mine do.

You are correct. My Plats also have 10 sections. It appears those are Silvers as Gary also mentioned in his post. Al, you can also verify by measuring height.
