AL-III replacement foam

For what its worth , I replaced my acoustic AL-III,s foam for under 10.00 dollars...I know there is a guy selling his on e-bay for 46.00 with shipping....

I've never liked the pickled/whitewashed oak look, but if they hadn't been finished in that I'd have never talked Karrie into letting me put them where they are! So in the interest of actually getting to hear them, I'm OK with the color.

When I bought them, the foam had dry rotted terribly. I just took it out and never looked back. Painted the metal colored parts black & they look great now. I didn't like the sound with the "acoustically transparent" (right) foam, anyways....

I don't think there is anything particularly special about the foam. I also don't know if it makes a difference sonically. I've never done a side by side comparison. Glad you found it cheap Steve.

That stuff must be the same stuff that my Time Windows are "wrapped" in. It looks and feels the same. Just as a source of reference, where did you get the stuff, and what sizes does it come in? Does it come in sheets?

I asked the guy what it was called and he said it was like a filter foam , with a light behind it you can see through it , but at the same time it does protect the ribbons from dust , sonically no differance..yes had sheets of it....he had it in 3/8ths and 1/2 inch....I just went in there after voting thinking I had to replace my disapeering foam that was on the AL,s...to my suprise this stuff turned out nice....

I got it a local upholstery store...mom and pop shop...maybe I should buy the whole sheet...

What you are lookign for is open cell or reticulated foam; te kind that has no little membranes between the threads that make up the cells. You should be able to see right through the foam sheet if you hold it up close to your eyes. If you do not see through it, it will block out or attenuate most higher frequencies.

How thick was the stuff you got. I can see retriculated open cell Scott foam in ¼" thick sheets for like $37.

I used 3/8ths....probable could have used 1/2.....but the 3/8ths turned out good...like I said , it was a crap shoot , but it worked out real nice...
