AL-III+ sealed sub

Let's say I built my IB subwoofer and sent everything from 80hz down to it, then sent 80-200hz to a "low-mid" driver, with the balance going to the ribbon in my AL-III+. I would like to seal the port on the AL-III+ sub section and use a driver rated for the size of the enclosure. It's my understanding that the volume of the sub enclosure is about 1.5 cu ft. Is this correct and can anyone recommend a 10" driver for this box volume and frequency range?

I'll do the math on the cabinet size when I get to the shop, so we know what size it really is.

I am thinking about leaving my ports open, and trying a pair of JL 10W3's... a much better driver, but I will have to play around with it a little. The AL-III's are too "boomy" for me, and I LIKE bass ! So far I prefer the Kicker XPL drivers I have in my AL-V's which are ported, and about 2cu.ft.

I think the problem you are going to run into is, most 10" drivers do not need THAT big of an box, if they are sealed... ported, yes, but sealed is usually much smaller.

James, the W3 is less efficient (87dB?) than the original AL-III driver (which I've been told is over 90, possibly as high as 93 dB). However, if you're bi-amping, it won't matter.

I have a jigsaw and lots of screws and wood glue. Installing something in the woofer box to reduce the volume wouldn't be too difficult, really. This way I could design the volume of the box exactly for a 10" drive at the frequency range planned.

I also know nothing about how to build or design a sub what about Sunfire True Signature subs? They are very small and get down to very low frequency.

Yes, but to make up for small box volume you need MASSIVE amp output...

Sorry for the long delay in answering. I found some web resources for designing cabinet size. It is necessary to know all the parameters of the speaker, like Xmax, Qtc, etc. before you can calculate the size of box in the frequency range you are looking for. Therefore if I have the volume of the box fixed from the AL-III then I have to choose a driver with the correct parameters to install and get the frequency range I am looking for. As I am thinking of the range from 80-200hz, there is no need to have massive output below 80hz, so the tuning should be in the middle of the range around 140hz.
