OMFG!

I dont even know how to say this.....

I think I fucked up all four ribbons on my Originals.

Tonight I decided to play with my new 760x, hooked it up direct from the CDP and turned the pots on the back of the amp down to
1/2 way....as per RobertR suggestion...thanks by the way that worked well. Anyway as I was playing with the pots I turned
them up a little at a time when I realized I was all the way there.... it was loud but it wasnt as loud as it should be.....and the meters
never hit higher than 200w. I turned everything off and started to inspect the amp and the Originals....everything looked fine and then I noticed
something......the ribbons were completely flat.....no crimps........How???

Then it dawned on me.
The day that I moved them down stairs I was alone, so I used a movers dolly. I was careful but that is the only thing I can think of
is that as I took them downstairs the small jolts from stair to stair must of pushed the magnets or ? and pulled the ribbon tight.

I have left a Pm with James..toymaker..but I am pretty sure I know what he is going to say.

As I sit here all I can think of is I'm the biggest idiot.....I knew the ribbons were fragile....It just didnt come to me

This is as close to actually crying real tears I've come to in the last 15 yrs......FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!

I'm sure they received worse treatment on the freight truck that delivered them to the store that originally sold them.

What's the humidity like in your house right now?

I take it that your CDP has no way to control the volume and that you had cranked the gain levels of the amp all the way up?

Sorry to hear about your trouble Perry. I know those ribbons are very fragile and do not like to be jarred about. Hopefully it's not a magnet issue.

When you get them hot, sometimes they temporarily "lose" their crinkles. Is that what you're talking about? Mine clear back up once they've cooled down...

Perry, is it the way they look or the way they sound. I've seen mine both flat and crinkled. If they don't sound any different I wouln't be all that concerned. They are the original gold colored ones right???Art

ALL 30" ribbons are factory FLAT, no crinkles they only crinkled the 48" and 60" Kapton. The 30" ribbons are 2 trace and the others are 4 trace.

Hmmm..... The ribbons on mine were crimped......

This is the best picture I have showing the crimp:



If you look closely at the ribbon on the right you can see it,
but still visible on the left also. Very even spaced crimps.
All 4 ribbons had exactly the same crimping with it being somewhat smoother (but still crimped)
towards the last 5-6" of each end of the ribbons....???????

Weird.....I am going to phone James tonight.....I dont know what
the norm is because these are the only set of Originals I have ever
seen in the flesh.
