Crossover Questions

Just a few things I've noticed about the crossovers on my f----d up speakers I bought. First of all I should ask are the crossovers you're looking at are actual platinum models. I'm very familiar with the Originals but have not taken much notice of the Platinums. Secondly I noticed that one of the crossovers is upsidedown in relationship to the other. One of the speakers looks it was very professionally wired while the other(the one with the marettes between the crossover and ribbons seems to have been messed with. The upsidedown one probably does not affect the performance but it does explain some of the cockeyed wiring I think. If I'm doing the refit maybe I should flip the thing over. Just wondered what you thought of it.

The crossovers look the same and appear to be for Plats. But I would have expected them to be somewhat different than real plat crossovers because of the Honeycomb woofers. I thought it would be a hybrid between original amazing crossovers on the woofers and platinum crossovers on the ribbons. The woofer part (down where the thing that looks like a transformer in true plats is an 85mH inductor and a 450µF 150v capacitor. Does that match?

Hard to answer that, As you can see by the numbers on the pictures there's nothing like that.

If you take the crossovers off and on the mounted side may have a part number on it the plat's crossover part number is
601-00528-00. Looking at the schematic for the originals and plats I would have to say those are plat crossovers!

Anyone heard this theory about Originals converted to Platinums having a hybrid type crossover. I've never heard that one before. Art

Well, sure, I'm speculating, but the woofers in your Originals didn't get swapped when you upgraded the ribbons, and the two types of woofers are very different.

it wasn't the woofers that were harder to drive, it was the dual 30" ribbons that were a killer load for most amps. The honeycomb woofers are NOT interchangeable with the cone ones (different impedance, different wiring, different crossovers) and the swapping the dual 30" ribbons for the 60" ones also requires a different crossover. What you have there are upgraded originals, not anything oddball. What would be considered oddball would be 4 cone woofers with dual 30" ribbons; a combination that was never made.

Yes, mine are upgraded originals. It's late now and we have guests over for the night, but I will try to get pics of my crossovers up tomorrow.

Those are Plat x-overs. I've never heard that updated originals used anything but the standard Plat x-over. Not positive, but I think the honeycomb woofers are the same 16 ohm as the Plat woofers and present the same 4 ohm load.

Skip, that in itself would dictate a different crossover.

I have seen schematics of the crossovers somewhere. I just can't remember where. I believe that the impedance of the woofers in the Originals is quite different from the Platinums. I know that the Dynavox woofers are different because it's stated in their specs. That would mean a change in the crossover is a necessity. I hope you get them back to a state where they sound their usual glorious selves.

I've always heard the upgrade kits were just 60" ribbons and Plat x-overs. Changing out the woofers wasn't necessary.

In looking at mine, those aren't exactly plat x-overs. Not sure which model they are. I'll have to check the schematics.

Skip, if you have the schematics for the upgrades originals (60" ribbons and honeycomb woofers), I'd really like to have a look at them. Can you post them or give me a PM?
