I sent a email to tell him what he had so he could be right! He was glad to get the info!

Re: Amazings on ebay

Yep they work fine. But I ended up powering the AMAZINGS Biamped with a M500t on the woofers and a TFM45 on the ribbons through a Hafler 110 Pre and a Behringer electronic crossover SWEEEEEEET

Re: Amazings on ebay

Not to be critical (as I have no experience with bi-amping), but I guess I never really understood why you "need" 375 w/c to drive tweeters/ribbons* (that take very little power to drive and in fact the "bulk" of power is used for low frequencies = large displacements of "air"). Seems a waste of a 45's "time" to me  .
If I were going to "bi-amp" at 1st blush I'd look for a good tube or "tube-like" amp with lot's of power to drive the low end, and a VERY accurate (perhaps even digital!) relatively low power amp to drive the highs. And feed both with a very nice tube pre-amp.
But if it sounds great (your set-up) that's all that matters! Just seems like a waste of power/"musicality" to me to use a 45 to drive tweeters! Explain yourself!  Or not; whatever works! =D>

*Maybe that's the "answer": ribbons take gobs more power and "cover" more of frequency band then "tweeters"?

Re: Amazings on ebay

Personally, I never considered the ribbons as just "tweeters" since they cover most of the audio spectrum (crossover at 200 Hz or so, right?) And, since they are not that efficient, they need "gobs" of power to make decent sound levels.

Re: Amazings on ebay

I tried every combo adcom+ carver both ways, adcoms only (not very warm kinda harsh) put the 45 on the woofers 500 on the ribbons listened for a week and liked it. Then for the heck of it swapped them around all I could say the ribbons seemed to come alive with the 45 and the woofers are right at home with the 500 they seem easy to drive. And what fstik said the ribbons are very inefficiant.I am crossing them over at just under 200hz. I think I could give them all even more power and they would like it. Mark

Re: Amazings on ebay

One would hope that when Bob designed all this stuff that he would make sure that his amps would work great with his speakers. I have no doubt that other amps will do just fine but I would go with a Sunfire or a Carver amp to power his ribbon speakers.
Some cool Carver stuff!

Re: Amazings on ebay

The 48" ribbon in the AL-III covers 150Hz to 20kHz (and beyond), and is relatively flat throughout the region. It takes a lot of power to cover that spectrum with a single device.

Re: Amazings on ebay

The ribbons especially on the originals are not efficient at all and do take a lot of power to drive them. More so then the woofers.
