carver Al-3 Plus, 4 Ohms or 8 ohams

Hi evervone, my name is Alan and I am new to this forum.

I am the owner of a Al-3 plus since 1998 and 3 months age I change my power amp to a Rogue m-120 monoblocks ( http://www.rogueaudio.com/Products_m120.htm ) which has separate 4 and 8 ohm speaker taps in the back, and for whatever reason ( I must be daydreaming) I connect the al-3 to the 8 ohm speaker taps 3 months ago and use it 2 to 3 hours per day. My Question is (a) Is the al-3 is Impedance at 4 Ohms? and (b) Will it cause damage to the amplifier or the speaker if I use the incorrect ohms taps?

Today, I moved the speaker cable back to the 4 ohm taps, and I hope I didn't damage anything.

Yes, the AL-III impedance is 4 ohms. However, I'm not sure what connecting to your 8 ohm taps would do to your amplifier. I'm sure someone with more knowledge about amplifier topology will be along to answer your question soon!

Thank You TNRabbit. As of today, everything still working and sound good, it was a stupid mistake and I just don't want to damage the amp or the ribbons.

If you didn't push the amps hard while they were hooked to the incorrect outputs, I doubt you did any harm...

Welcome to the forum. Wonderful looking system you have.

My sense is the amps worked a little harder to drive the load, but like rabbit says if you didn't push them hard then there's probably no reason to worry.

Beautiful system! How do you like the Shandling CD player? If the amps still work, I doubt any harm was done. Did they overheat at all?

Thank everyone for the help, both amps and speakers are working fine, today I use piano music to test the speaker for 2 hours and they sound as good as the first day I bought it. Also received email from tech support of Rogue Audio, they stated the amps is able to handle such abuse and I will only get slightly lower power if use the incorrect taps.

As for the Shanling, I own it for 3 1/2 years, it build like a tank, nice up-sampling to tightening up the resolution & soundstage and I was very happy with the rich & colorful midrange performance. However the there is no tech support from the company (they never return email) and the player is very sensitive to feedback and will skip if the cd is scratch.
