Just a late update. My set has the Phase III Motion Control Module. It gives it a SH effect but seams more natural.

Cool - the MCM is hard to come by and makes a difference (as you suggest) in the listening experience.

I notice in the previous pictures that the speakers appear to be standing perpendicular to the ground. Mine were 'laid back' at a 15° - 20° angle - I was told (not by Bob) that it was done deliberately to time/phase align the mid-bass drivers with the tweeters. (I had another pair of speakers once - Spica Angelus - that did something similar although they physically sloped the front speaker mounting and baffle; they sounded very, very good and were noted for their exceptional phase coherence.) On the other hand, maybe my stands were just tired....

They are leaning back like yours. Pics can kill depth perception.

I have a set with the light colored covers. Probably time for an overhaul on mine as well, I'll have to give Rita's shop a call. They also lean slightly to the rear. I bought them new in '79, they never came with the module sadly. Still the best sounding speakers I have ever owned. - dan

They are suppose to lean slightly to the rear. What is wrong with them, that you need a overhaul? I'm not sure anyone works on the speakers anymore.

I had a pair of Andromedas and while (stupidly) listening to Mobile Fidelity's Sounds of Trains CD at insane volumes, tore the cone out of one of the mid-bass units in one of the panels. Took the speaker to Around The Sound in Seattle and he reconed it as good as new. It seems this gentleman has been doing this kind of work since he was in high school, repairing speakers for a drive-in movie theater as a part time job. His knowledge of conventional coned speakers is second to none. Service information is available on various websites...

What material is the surround material on the mids?

The speaker I ripped, referred to as the "midbass drivers" in the documentation, are 8" (two per panel) with paper cones. The midrange (two per panel, one forward, one rearward firing) are 4" drivers with paper cones as well. There are four (per panel) 2" paper cone tweeters, treated with "a specially developed damping compound" (to enhance transient response) facing upward utilizing dispersion funnels. Early versions (prior to serial number 1736) used an additional 2" 'treated' cone tweeter, while later versions employed a 1" soft-dome tweeter.

Sorry, engtaz, I thought you were talking about the cones. You're right - the surrounds on the midbass (8") drivers were butyl rubber, as I recall.

As I recall, the midrange driver surrounds were made of some fibrous material coated with some sort of black stuff, almost looking like paint, but flexible.

Sounds like Carver's version of JBL's Aquaplas coating.
