Carver AL-III woofer specs

Newbie here but long time lurker. I got a few interesting questions. I have a pair of AL-III's (not the III+). They are in excellent condition - absolutely nothing wrong with them. Lately I've been thinking about trying something new. I was thinking about 1 of 2 things. (1): change out the OEM 10" subwoofer in the AL-III for a newer, beefier, better one - specifically the Infinity Kappa Reference. This speaker has a freq range of 25 to 400Hz, 250 watts cont - 1000 watts peak, and works well in a ported enclosure *possibly* the same size as the speakers exising box. The 400Hz upper limit of the Infinity should fit well with the 200Hz crossover cutoff. _ Anyone try this? (2): Build a new speaker system altogether and integrate the ribbon AND existing crossover into it. I'm thinking a design similar to the Original Amazing's - ribbon and 1 or 2 woofers, excepte this time I want to use maybe (2) 12" or (1) 15" woofer in the same trapezoid panel desing as the Amazing's. I can build the speaker with no problem as I have a full scall wood workshop, BUT, the crossover specs and the woofer specs are questionable. Provided the enclosure is built accurate for the sub to produce the best and deepest bass, can I use the existing crossover on the new subs? 200Hz upper limit, and OEM equaliztion. Problem is what impedance should I use? The original? Should any added filters be used on the crossover? Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Carver AL-III woofer specs
I was looking into replacing the factory drivers in my AL-3 pluses and everwhere I turn it seems the speakers have been discontinued. Any ideas on current model woofer replacements? I'm looking to upgrade from the original, not an oem part, thanks.

Re: Carver AL-III woofer specs
All of these speakers have been discontinued. I was hoping that someone had already done the leg work to figure out a current model replacement. I'll look into it a little more, thanks.

Re: Carver AL-III woofer specs
I did a quick read and came up with the infinity kappa 10.1 which is discontinued. I'll re-read the threads to see if I missed anything, thanks.

Re: Carver AL-III woofer specs
Yes, they are discontinued, but I have found 3 pair on ebay/craigslist in the past 4 years.
JL Audio makes some GREAT woofers/subs, but you'll most likely need to bi-amp to get them balanced with the ribbons. One of the posters made mention of a Dayton Audio woofer they replaced the original woofers with, but I don't have personal knowledge of that particular swap...

Re: Carver AL-III woofer specs
I checked on the daytons as well and the link provided says discontinued. I'll keep an eye out for the kappas but will do some research to find a current model replacement. There's so many speakers out there that there just has to be one still for sale with similiar specs as the kappas. I'm going to look around today and post it here if I find anything, thanks.

Re: Carver AL-III woofer specs
I'm sure that maybe a step up from stock but the xmax is half of the infinity, along with power handling and 5db shy on sensativity. My woofers are working just fine for now so I have time to find the best replacement possible. I know I can find something pretty close to the infinitys spec wise, it will just take a little research.

Re: Carver AL-III woofer specs
Well, like I said, the Infinitys are the best I've found, even if you have to search to find used ones.
JL Audio makes fantastics subs, but you'll pay dearly & again, you'd have to bi-amp/active crossover to equalize. Having gone full active crossovers, I'll NEVER go back to a passive crossover~
