Carverfest Amp Tube Supernova

So, these are the Sovtek eBay tubes Bob suggested.

These had been running hard earlier, the temp at that time was 360 degrees.
They were turned down when this happened.

They were still playing and sounded fine.

What caused this?

Is it dead?

Wonder if overvoltage failure is same deal since these things are operating outside of their range.

That is not good. I would replace that tube and possibly not run the amp until you figure out if the tube just failed or there is a issue with the amp. Tubes going supernova can damage other components or speakers.

It was part of a matched quad....doh!

Kinda looks like Mike's amp with the LEDs , but only on 1 tube....kinda.....

I have no idea what to tell you, Martin; hence, the silly replies. I'd guess bad tube. It happens. Not like they were $50 each....

tinpan has the same tubes....better keep an eye on them, Robin!

I really think the issue is the voltage, it's at the very top edge of the spec, and outside of some tubes by about 100V...
the only tru way would be to drop the voltage into a zone that would allow you to roll other tubes.
as you know if you do this, a few resistors will have to be changed
and a diffrent transformer. will it change the sound. I dont know.....

on the web sites schematics it shows a lower voltage, not the 420v or so that you have to start out with....

I have the Mullards in mine per Dan's recommendation. So far, no problem with the tubes.

I have 470 volts on my tube circuit....

OK, so now the plan is to find a couple of quads of 500+ volt rated EL84s.

I'll look into the Mullards.

Maybe the Yen Audio guys have an idea, too.
