Sunfire classic tube preamp

Post by MRHP » Thu Mar 22, 2012 6:52 pm

I receintly purchased a Sunfire tube pre and just got it hooked up today. I must be doing something wrong here because this thing sounds terrible :( It sounds like I threw a blanket over the speakers is the only way I know to describe it. There is nothing obvious its just very flat and dull, like a cassette tape playing on dolby B. Am I missing something here???? I tried a different set of tubes that work very well in my 490t and it helped a tiny bit but nothing like it should.

The tubes are probably old. They might even be the original tubes.

if you have an EQ in loop take it out and see what it sounds like.
when I did my hook up, only changing out the pre, it sounded shitty.
thinking what the hell did I hook up wrong, I spent and hour rechecking and doing hook ups, when I fliped the loop switch after the hr of stressin, the sound got way better....
so what I had EQ'd into for the crappy pre I was using before, made the tube pre sound... well... shitty

I do not run the EQ for music, only for TV/movies, there it helps

it does have a diffrent sound than you maybe used too.

The Sunfire TGP's are hard to beat. :D The Tube pre may take some time to get use to, appreciate, definitely a different sound. When you have the cover off next time look at all the caps, make sure none are leaking.

Oops! Sorry I missed that I was reading from my smartphone. On the HE-MAN pc now. :D I agree with mbskeam remove any eq or stuff like that from the signal path. Run the Sunfire straight to your amp. Also what tubes did you change? V1 is for the contour, V2 is the left channel and V3 is the right. If you only changed V2 and V3 a crap tube in V1 can still make it sound like shit. So if you have enough new tubes around make sure that V2 and V3 are like tubes and placed the odd new tube in V1. There is an EQ in the loop so I will remove and try again. I am running it with the cover off for some quick tube changes if that matters. I will also check the caps. Im a little hard of hearing from being around machinery and race engines all my life so I like the eq set for some sparkle in the highs....gonna try some things and see what happens.

I already looked HARD at the 180wpc tube amps that jjptkd linked from ebay for 4K. Then found out from thuffman(sp) they can be hopped up to 220-240wpc with a tube change.

Alright I took the DQ10's out and put in the DQ'9s because they are much brighter. Also had the 600x2 on mains and the 75 on subs so I switched them because the 75 is more forward and not near as laid back as the 600. Its getting better......I just wasnt ready for such a hugh change in sound. Guess I figured it would be like the TGPII only a little smoother and detailed.
