I know what you mean about change. When I first got my JBL's I wasn't used to a soundstage like that. I was used to a more up front 2D type sound. It took a minute to adjust. Now I am soooooooooooo happy! :D

Im gonna keep in the system for a while and try some more tubes. With the TGPII the sound stage was not real wide but it was by all means deep. The reproduction of sound was like the band was in my room playing. This tube pre just sounds like all the tweeters and midrange were un hooked and its playing full range thru the woofer. I cant really pick up on the sound stage because its so flat sounding.

What color are the caps and where are they at??

To be honest, I'm not exactly sure. I've talked with Bill about these tube pre's on a number of occasions and he's told me that there's some main caps that are prone to leakage and that they can even render the board irreparable if not caught in time. Did you buy the one that was on Audiogon? :-k

I've only had the pleasure of owning one tube pre, had it for about a week. I thought it sounded at least as good as the TGP-III I was using at the time, just different. The lack of digital inputs and remote are why I ended up flipping it, same as the C-19. :?

Congrats on the SF Pre, I think you will enjoy the hell out of it. I would spend some time listening to it and see if it doesn't become more appealing as you get used to it. I like listening to live music on tube set ups, maybe that will help as you get acclimated to it.

I also found switching speakers around make a huge difference, more so with amps than pre amp. It's not that any of them sound bad, but sometimes you'll hit a combo that just clicks, then you'll know you have it.

Ive got some good live music to try out and plenty of speakers. Im thinking the DQ20's are going to be the ticket if Regnar will get my freakin woofers done and sent back. :-({|=

I unhooked the tube pre and used my 490t as the preamp instead and the sound was quite abit brighter, has anybody done a A/B compare like this? Im just trying to make sure something isnt wrong with it. But I hear what you guys are saying, I just need to get adjusted to it.

Plus a certain forum member that lives in a dog house and calls his master charlie brown is sending me some real nice tubes to try. Thanks Snoop65!

Just to be clear, none of these caps in this picture on the blue PCB are electrolytic caps that are subject to heat and to the typical 7 year life expectancy. This you might change for these for sonic character, but they will not show any bulging and spewing like electrolytics.

Power supply caps (to the left side of the pic, just behind the pexiglass), however, will be a different story! What's visable in the picture don't appear bad, though visible signs aren't always necessary for them to be going south.

viewtopic.php?f=16&t=11328&start=45

look at the pics at the bottom of the thread.
these are the caps that may have issues.

as Mark stated the caps on the main board, really dont have the heat/age issue going against them.
do the tone controls do anything?

The more I listen to it the better I like it....just like you guys told me   Some of my problem was simply that the tube pre is sooo quiet you have to crank up the volume alot more than the TGPII. With a few more tube changes today things started getting ALOT better. \:D/ My 12yr old said it sounded like the music was going past us instead of being right in front of us. Maybe his way of saying its more 3D and I would have to agree. Here are a couple pics of the inside:

OK.....I had a pair of F Mod low pass crossovers plugged into the second set of outputs for the subwoofer amp. I know this is not the most efficient way to crossover. Anyway went to unplug the F Mod and BAM soundstage, cymbals, room filling highs!!

Somehow just plugging in the F Mod to the second set of outputs kills the high end of sound coming thru the main speakers.

I feel a little stupid but who would have known? Anyway I have a very nice sounding preamp. \:D/
