Somehow just plugging in the F Mod to the second set of outputs kills the high end of sound coming thru the main speakers.

I feel a little stupid but who would have known? Anyway I have a very nice sounding preamp. \:D/

So far:
Amperex USN CEP gold pins in V2 & V3
Amperex orange globes in the 490t
Jan Phillips in V1

I got to this point with a little help from snoop65 and its working real nice with my limited supply of tubes. I have been rolling only the V1 position once I got the above setup. This setup also works well with a Mullard ECC88 in the V1 position. So far the most impressive tube has been the Jan Phillips, they cost $40 and give the USN CEP gold pins($175) a good run for the money. The gold pins do have the best sound though.

I have some bugle boys coming and some Siemens ECC88's also. Looking forward to more rolling. \:D/

That's great news. Sometimes less is more, particularly with pre amps. #-o

That is a wonderful preamp and I am glad you are getting a chance to enjoy it

i have a set of fmods high pass rca modules, and when i tell you they sound like shit, i am putting it lightly.i thew up a little in my mouth when i first used them. i would get a electronic two way, or if you like to just use a coil and cap for the woofer . if it must be simple and no high pass. with the two parts, you would have a 12db xover. for that matter, i would suggest finding an audio control richer scale that has such low pass and some eqing that could go the that woofer, and then it would up the antee on your rig . last one i saw on ebay went for around 70 shipped. if you listen to old seventies and eighties music that lacks bass, or even older music wih the sub bass resoration on them, it rules like no other product that i have witnees. cheers and remember the fmods suck in my case, and that it only matters what it sounds like to you.......

so i stand corrected as the richter scale is not a bass restoration unit. the richter scale is a low end equalizer / analyser / xover. the phase coupled activator is the bass resoration unit from many years back. if the bass restoration is of interest, a car audio version called audiocontrol epicenter and a 12 volt supply is needed if you don't see the phase coupled activator anywhere around like ebay. cheers.

If you're looking for a great crossover, I highly recommend the Ashly XR1001. They can be had on ebay for as little as $150 and are outstanding quality, dead silent, and very accurate.

That's a good thought MRHP. I never tried one of my Siemens tubes in v1. I will make that happen this weekend.

Let us know how you like it snoop.

Chevelle I also forgot to mention if you have some, try bugle boys in place of the orange globes in V2 @ V3. This seems to put the highs a little more in your face. Which sounds really good on certain types of music.

Does V1 have an impact on sound if the contour is off? It was my understanding that V1 was contour, and V2 & V3 were the L & R channels.

Yes it does. If you pull the tube out of v1 the preamp will not work. So even with the contour disengaged the signal still passes through the v1 tube.
