Sunfire TGP1 hiss issue

Post by rah » Mon Oct 08, 2012 11:23 am

Have a Sunfire TGP1 and have noticed the following:

There is a distinct, audible static “click" when volume goes from exactly -20dB to -19dB and a HUGE increase in the noise floor, meaning hiss, especially with Holography on. I bet the hiss noise increases 5X or more with Holography on.

I don't get the static click sound at any other volume changes.

My brother who also has a TGP1 reports the exact same thing happens with his.

Now with Klipsch Chorus II"s I rarely get to that volume level, but with Magnepans I can easily hit it.

Now I'm thinking maybe a newer model TGP might be in my future, but before I do:

Anyone who has a TGP II, III or newer, can you test yours under the same exact conditions and let me know if it does the same?

Thanks.
My office (and only) system:
Sunfire Ultimate Receiver (thanks jjptkd!)
Sunfire Theater Grand Processor (with original remote!)
Carver TD-1770
Klipsch Chorus II's
Sony CA70ES 5-disc changer
Sony SACD 5-disc changer

I had a Sunfire Ultimate Receiver 9TG-III processor) & Theater Grand IV and neither exhibited this problem. Dead silent.

I have an TGP III and it is silent.

The SH is silent but I believe from the III on SH is digital so that may be quieter.

I have no noise problems AT ALL with this Pre.

If you replace your unit go with a TGP-III or newer as there is no service or updates available for the first two models. My favorite TGP's are the III & IV, both very similar in sound and features and the last models that were made right here in Snohomish WA, everything later on was made in China. #-o

Here's a rare 19" TGP-III for sale on eBay, they've been trying to sell it for some time now so I'm sure they'll come down a bit on the price. This will match the amps you already have. The more common 17" versions always look a little weird to me sitting on a wider amplifier. :?
