Replacing caps in Power supply of Sunfire tube preamp

Post by Carv-it-up » Mon Jan 07, 2013 2:02 pm

Has anyone done this? If so, what brand of Cap did you use and how did it sound? Also if I wanted to beef-up the Power Supply a little during the replacement procedure, how might that be accomplished?
Two Signature Cinema Grand Series II amplifiers (both are used in bi-amping my Infinity IRS Beta speakers)
Cherry 180's (use them off & on to power the mids/highs tower of IRS Beta speakers)
Sunfire Signature 600~Two amplifier (used on Thiel CS5i)
Carver TX-12 tuner
Own & working, but not in use right now - Sunfire Series II amplifier + two Carver M500t MKII amplifiers + Sunfire Classic Vacuum Tube Preamplifier preamp w/ phono & remote.

I have one of these. have not messed with the caps thou.
high dollar caps in the PS may not give ya all that much more for the dollar
now the ones in the single path would give you the most bang for the buck, will it sound better, only you could know....
why do you think the PS needs to be beefed up?

I was looking to run the 6h30 tube in the three line stage portion. I know Dr. W likes these tubes in his Sunfire preamp, but my model is a little older than his (11/99 to his xx/02). Wanted to beef them-up a little not so much for the sound the new caps would give, but to handle the additional current draw placed on the power supply by these thirsty tubes.

Do you have any suggestions on what caps in the preamp might be a good change to have the preamp sound better? Also, what brand is good to try?

I'm sure just about any caps that you find would be better than what is in there now. as these are comin up on 15yrs.
I thought you were going after those Russian tubes like Dr W. just had to ask
its all about the current draw of the heaters on these tubes,
looking at the transformer I bet you could find one that puts out more low voltage current, there is some room to go bigger, but will the PS board handle this? I cant tell ya...
hopefully someone with a bigger brain pan than mine will chime in on this .....

Mbskeam I was going to try out the 6h30 Super Tubes, but I'd have to replace the caps and transformer. This is a bit much for me right now. My tech says he tries not to deviate from the specs on items, because that's when you can get into trouble with one thing effecting another thing which may intern effect another etc... Ima just have my tech. give the preamp a once-over and go from there; replacing the tubes w/Ediswan 6922 from Upscale Audio. Hopefully there aren't any problems under the hood when he looks at my unit.
Has anyone had any issues with the screws that hold the two EQ knobs in place? The unit I have is missing them. I'll have to shop around at my local supply stores to see in they carry this type of screw. I hope it's not like trying to find the seemingly innocuously looking light bulb for the Sunfire amplifiers. That light bulb chase is like looking for a needle in the proverbial hay-stack here in the Los Angeles area.

I called them last week and they said they aren't handling light bulb replacements any more. What number do you have? Bill has some for $10 a pop. I'll pay that, but free sounds so much better.

Can the unit play normally with tubes only in the Line Stage and none in the Phono Stage? I don't plan on using the Phono section any time soon and would rather preserve those, by taking them out completely, since I won't be playing LP's.

The bulb has ZERO marking on it but Ken's electronics may be able to help. The 419 Galaxy radio bulb in clear is what is used in the TFM series amps and looks similar... http://www.kenselectronics.com/lists/lites.htm#axial

I did not want to start a new thread for a simple question, so I'm asking in an old thread I started.

When I received my Sunfire tube preamp recently the contour knobs were exteremly loose and fell off. Does anyone know how many clicks to the left (decreasing bass or treble) and how many clicks to the right (increasing bass or treble) the contour knobs go? That way I'll be able to find out where zero/neutral or flat position is when I attempt to put them back on.

Third click is neutral from either side.

I thought there were 5 positions? That would mean the center would be the third position from eirher side, but the secomd "click".....
