Is it safe to bridge my Sunfire amp?

Post by Carv-it-up » Tue Jan 28, 2014 6:23 pm

Is it safe to bridge a Sunfire Signature Cinema Grand? I'm thinking of using only one channel of my 5 ch. CG amp. In the manual of the stereo version of the Sunfire amp it says it's ok to bridge, but you must use the two Current taps when bridging? Has anyone ever bridged a CG using it's Current taps and did it work well?
I use to have Bob's number when I bought my Cherry 180's, but his number has changed since then.
Two Signature Cinema Grand Series II amplifiers (both are used in bi-amping my Infinity IRS Beta speakers)
Cherry 180's (use them off & on to power the mids/highs tower of IRS Beta speakers)
Sunfire Signature 600~Two amplifier (used on Thiel CS5i)
Carver TX-12 tuner
Own & working, but not in use right now - Sunfire Series II amplifier + two Carver M500t MKII amplifiers + Sunfire Classic Vacuum Tube Preamplifier preamp w/ phono & remote.

Kinda. Bass unit has 4 woofers per tower...and there's two towers.
I want as much headroom as I can get from my amp.

You can mono it but use the resistor outputs. Y adaptor the inputs, then parallel the two positive outputs. I believe thats how thats done on a sunfire bob said. But he also did not think high of the idea either. Who else remembers what he said at the fest.

Yes, I have two Sunfire Sig. CG that I am currently only using one channel on each speaker tower right now. If Bob was leaning towards it not being a good idea for the CG's, then I'll defer to his good judgement. I was trying to just get maximum use of the amp and its other 4 unused channels.
Anybody else recall specifically what Bob said or any other person has done with using the CG as a monobloc?

Consider this. For a system to play twice as loud, it needs two times the power and two times the speakers for a six db increase. It takes six to ten db to be twice as loud depending on frequency, so it would only show if you are full tilt, about to trip the breaker kind of deal. How often do you play at that level? Most of the time i only am listening to ten twenty watts. Only when i put on the 1812 overture do i need that other few hundred watts. Just a thought.

If the speakers are bi- amp that would do some good on clarity by using more channels devoted to less speakers. More damping per channel.

Yes, in the two channel manual you can parallel the current outputs, never the voltage outputs.

Then by using one amp for left and one for right, that would also rock. More channel separation and power supply.

Angelo...you realize he's talking about a CINEMA GRAND, not 2 channel amp, right? I'm not aware you can do that parallel mono with a multi channel amp....

Not only that but somewhere I had heard that to double the volume requires ten times the power.

Yes, I am running one CG Sig amp per bass ch. w/ the Cherries on the mids & highs.

I do understand that it takes 10x the power to hear sound twice as loud...and doubling the power only gives 3db of headroom. Trust, I understand that. I would like to get that 3db of headroom if it's available. Looking to maximize the performance out of the two CG's I have.

Harry,

I believe things are different in Califorification. They play by different rules out there!
