Anybody adjust the gain on a Sunfire 300 x 2 Amp?

Post by Miko1971 » Sat Jan 17, 2015 2:29 pm

Hello,
In the owners manual it states that you can increase the gain 12.7db by connecting a jumper across the JP1 point on the circuit boards of each channel.
anyone try that?

Nope....has more than enough gain as is for my ~4 ohm impedance sphere's....
Must be something lost in doing this otherwise why would it not be the baseline configuration? [-X

If it ain't broke....would be my reason for not messy around with this, but if you try it, I'd be interested in what you find out.

12.7dB is a lot! 500mV RMS sensitivity?

Just curious, but are you trying run a Sunfire amp directly off an iPhone?

Also, remember that gain is not going to change how much power is possible from an amp unless you can't get enough level as is.

I find to much gain in amps is normal. I do not desire to have the preamp knob in the lower area for normal use. I'd prefer more like about 3/4's up...leaving a little more if needed. Any less and you are paying something of a noise penalty.

It's routine to see misguided people equate amp gain to some kind of quality thing. The "I got a powerful new amp and now I only have to turn up the volume to half way to blow me out!" FIrst, again, that's not power, that's gain. And second it tells you it's a mismatched system and they are getting less quality than they could be.

That may not at all be where you're headed, but this seems like a good place as any to blow off about this common thing.

Studies have shown that louder / more powerful = sounds better (in most minds). Sadly this is how most folks generally judge systems also.... #-o
-If it plays louder than live......you have to be adding something that is or was not there to begin with in the original recording (over amplification of the signal). :-s

I run the Classic Vacuum tube pre so it's not mismatched. I was just curious if anybody had ever tried it since it was an option to do so. for my listing level's i have the gain at almost the maximum. i was thinking that increasing the gain would allow for finer adjustment of volume by not running it all the way over.. one i get my pre amp back from audio horizons, i'll see if that didn't help any. plus roll in some Telefunken NOS tubes i have sitting here.
