What are you building at CarverFest 2016?

Post by Magnaryder » Tue Jul 26, 2016 11:15 am

I will be putting the finishing touches on my GlassWares 8 tube Aikido phono pre, repairing a nuked CF amp and hopefully completing a new CF amp build from parts I acquired a while back. I just spoke with Bob and he's sending me a BOM and new mods he says makes the amp more reliable. I'll be including the mods I made to my other amps also.

Cool.

Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.

I've bought a Marshall 9200 100WPC tube amp, it's going to CF via Martin 1970 who kindly demoed it and picked it up and RobertR who is transporting it so it arrives earlier to CF. I'm hoping we (hopefully with Bob's guidance) can do some mods to the negative feedback to improve voicing, and maybe the DC Restorer circuit can be added.

Cool, look forward to a listening session. What else are you going to have it connected to? Also, look forward to meeting you.

Not sure what I'm going to hook it up to; I asked Loner_T if he could bring some speakers, and he kindly offered some, but he is not coming for the first week, only the second. I figured I could bring an Ipod pre-loaded with tunes since the amp has gain controls, but of course that does not allow for tone adjustments (aside from any internal to the ipod). The difficulty here is that I'm flying from California so I won't be able to bring much.

If anyone has some small/mid size speakers they could bring during the first week (or two weeks) for this amp I'd really appreciate it.

I finally have reached my place in NY State, where I have internet hook-up. Should be here until Fest Time.

Russ - I'll have speakers at the Fest, and some sort of preamp, etc. How you will get the amp back home with you is your main problem, as I see it.

I was planning to remove the tubes; maybe do the bag with spray foam trick between the amp chassis and the cover. I can add it to my checked baggage for the flight home (for $75 fee) if it's less than 100 lbs.

I finished the power supply build for my Glass-Wares Aikido 8 tube phono board. With help from Mark Lucas of LucasLabs fame we got it running and passing sound. While I'm still at work, I hope to get my system up and running sometime this week and get 2 chassis ordered for the phono board and a separate chassis for the PSU.

Looks like a lot of empty spaces on the tube un-populated board. I'm sure there is a reason. Care to share?

All of the components are on the underside. Put together this way, the board can mount right up to the top of the chassis with only the tubes coming up through the top.

Here is a picture of another Broskie board made the same way with the tubes coming up through a 1/4" piece of Corian.
