Well, its a good thing you found out now, this could have easily been blamed on the new preamp if you had waited. Bill @ Rita's Vintage Audio really knows Sunfire gear-- you should atleast give him a call to see what he has to say about it.

Don, did you ever get any resolution to this?

I know some manufacturers use a different pin configuration, so it's possible your + is being run to - on the other end.....

Gary,

No, just went back to balanced from Whisper XD Xilica processor to unbalanced into Sunfire, rather than using the balanced inputs. Have not ordered my Marantz AV7005 pre-amp yet to try that combo yet. Kept waiting for drop in price once it had been out for a year or so. Ironic thing is, after earthquake and tsunami, Marantz raised retail price $100. Go figure! ](*,)

Saw that; just wondered if you figured out what was wrong...

No, sorry. Did not trouble shoot anymore. System souds real good way it is. Just adjusted speaker levels through pre-amp, albeit a significant difference. Still plenty of juice available thru Sunfire and the fact the XD's each have their own sub amp certainly doesn't hurt.

Eventually, when I get the Marantz 7005 will try again and run all balanced vs unbalanced and compare the two.

I remembered asking Sunfire about balanced connectors and their polarity with regard to my Vacuum Tube Pre and 300~two amplifier... This was my response:

According to our Engineering Dept. the classic tube preamp has never changed its XLR pin out. Pin 2 is hot. Unless the 300 x2 amp was made prior to 2000, pin 2 of the XLR is also hot. If it was made before 2000 pin 3 is hot. Check the serial number of the amp. The first 4 digits are the year and month that the unit was made.
