Sunfire 200x5 - questions

Post by EndersShadow » Fri Sep 12, 2014 7:41 am

So I'm trying to find some info on the Sunfire 200x5. I know what they tend to go for, but I've got a couple questions.

1. What were the production years?
2. Who can work on them if they have issues?
3. How soon are they likely due for a recap?
4. Did they make a 19" model or are they all 17"?

Anything else I should be aware of.....

I know this may not get answered that quick given where a large majority of you fella's are... but if you see this, please respond asap, limited time to act on my part :).

The Pittsburg Toms are good with any Sunfire/Carver amps. They touched up my 300x2 and added an IEC and it sounded wonderful. Dont be in a hurry though.....patience is a virtue. :D

Bill Flannery is Bob's old Sunfire tech, he's got all the factory parts and papers plus a TON of experience with these specific units as that's all he repairs is Sunfire. Also he is very reasonably priced and has very fast turn arounds and will almost always answer the phone or call you back right away if missed.

I recommend calling Bill.

That said, recap is customarily 20 years-ISH, but that varies WILDLY with conditions of use/non-use. There are both 17" & 19" models.

The Cinema Grand 200x5 was first put out as a 19" in '96 and ran until about '01. They started making the 17" (Architect's Choice Series II) 225x5 in '00 til around '04 when they changed the name to "200-five," also a 17". They made those through '06 until Bob sold Sunfire. In '07 they started producing them in China as TGA-5200, the plain black box without a meter.

Pretty much my standard is if its a 19" it needs service, 17" models it depends on the date. Anything from mid '03 on should be fine for quite awhile. The older models will probably work fine as well for quite some time (assuming it works fine when you get it) but truthfully Sunfire used some really cheap parts in the early runs and the newer parts will not only last longer but they typically cut the noise floor in half. Give Bill a call if you have any questions, tell him Jesse sent you. :D

Thanks guys.

The one I was looking at was a 19" and I dont have room for a 19".

I have an entire middle shelf section I can use but its only 18 3/8 W x 15" H x 20" D.

So I will keep looking for a 17" Sunfire or another sized amp.
