Carverfest 2018 Tube Amp Build Update

Post by sea » Wed Jul 11, 2018 7:53 am

Many have been asking offline about the progress of the amp build kits.

Many of you know how hard it is to pin down Bob and get good information. ](*,) ](*,) I have spoken to him a couple of times in the last several days as has RobertR. He may want to reply with additions or clarifications.

This is the status as I understand it.
  • Bob is really starting to feel the pressure to get this done and realizes that time is short
  • However he is confidant that he will get it done.[-o< [-o<
  • He told me that the project is running well above budget. He did not state an amount. He did say that he was going to absorb the overage
  • The amps will come equipped with KT88's to hold the cost down a little. He is willing to send enough KT120's for those that want to upgrade
  • Please post to this thread if you would like to trade up to KT120's. The additional $ will be collected at Carverfest. I am not sure of the upcharge. I am guessing less than $100 but don't hold me to it.
  • He still plans to have the PCB's populated and tested but I think there is a chance this will not get done in time
  • I think the plan is to distribute the Kits on Saturday Sept 8
If I provide more details......I will have to start making up stuff!!!

ED, I WOULD LIKE TO UPGRADE BOTH AMPS TO KT120 TUBES! 8) BUT THIS IS WHAT WAS SAID EARLIER THAT KT120 WAS WHAT WE WERE GETTING?? NOW WE ARE NOT?

The original price was to be $575 with KT-88s, but Bob decided to do what most everybody wanted and upgrade to KT-120s - you get one-third more power, and they sound just as good. He hasn't nailed the exact price difference yet. My guess of $650 was deliberately a bit on the high side of what I expect it will be.???

As I said the project is going over budget. We sort of pressured him into the 675 "estimate".

Ed, please put me down for KT 120’s in both of my kits. The upcharge will be worth the extra cost to me.

Thanks,
Bob

I was planning on no tubes at all per the original talking points of a refund.

I don't want to add confusion so I will settle for KT88's since the project is going over budget.

Bob is doing us a HUGE! favor at $650 per amp, so no complaints.

I have twelve KT120's in my Cherries so I can swap out when ever where ever.

I want KT88's as long as they are original Mullard Great Britain made vintage......lol Just kidding!

KT88's for me.

Thanks Bob for this opportunity!!!

Talked to Bob again today. When he answered he was finishing up writing the owner's manual for the tall speakers, and I soon got drafted to check it over. He says things are progressing on the kits, and they already have a good start on the circuit boards. We discussed various aspects of the project, though nothing unexpected came up. The chassis are not being made yet, since (for one thing) he has to decide how many, where, and how big the drilled holes in it are to be.

He got going discussing output tube choices, and he keeps coming back to the 6550s as his favorites for these. About as powerful as the KT-88s, but even better 'K' specs (KT=Kinkless Tetrode).

Still no firm prices on various tubes. Bob said he's experiencing 'sticker shock' at every turn on this project; everything is constantly going up.

More whenever I hear some,

RR

Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.

Which 6550? Tung-Sol? There are lots of 6550 tube brands, and it's functionally equivalent to the KT88.

I'm into hearing what stuff you can make up. You can start with how much fun it has been dealing/handling this.

Thank YOU for your time and effort to keep it all straight.
