Talked to Bob again today. He got going discussing output tube choices, and he keeps coming back to the 6550s as his favorites for these. About as powerful as the KT-88s, but even better 'K' specs (KT=Kinkless Tetrode).

I've heard Bob speak highly of.....in his words.... "the mighty 6550" during random conversations at Carverfest.

OTD - There's bound to be some extra cost for 120's, but no figures at present. Talked with Bob half an hour yesterday, but the tube amp project never even got mentioned. It was all about another of his many projects, one I'm helping him on, in hopes that the time I can save him will be used on the kit project.
Not sure how payment will be handled for guys who don't get to the Fest, but it should not be a problem, once we have the actual cost figures.

OK, I've come to my senses; I'll go for 2 quads of KT-120's also, if it's not too late to put an order for them in.

Thanks Robert. Payment as you said should be no problem as I can send it anytime anywhere through my bank.

Talked to Bob again today. When he answered he was finishing up writing the owner's manual for the tall speakers, and I soon got drafted to check it over. He says things are progressing on the kits, and they already have a good start on the circuit boards. We discussed various aspects of the project, though nothing unexpected came up. The chassis are not being made yet, since (for one thing) he has to decide how many, where, and how big the drilled holes in it are to be.

He got going discussing output tube choices, and he keeps coming back to the 6550s as his favorites for these. About as powerful as the KT-88s, but even better 'K' specs (KT=Kinkless Tetrode).

Still no firm prices on various tubes. Bob said he's experiencing 'sticker shock' at every turn on this project; everything is constantly going up.

More whenever I hear some,

RR

RobertR,

Do we know for sure if the basic amp kits will be supplied with 6550 or KT88 tubes? Also what is the brand of the tubes?
Am I correct in assuming the upgraded KT120 will be reissued Tung-Sol matched quads? Any idea of when we will have a
figure on the additional cost for the KT120s? Also, when is the deadline to opt in for the KT120s?

Thanks...

Dennis47 - Reading your questions tells me you know about as much as I do about the tube situation. As soon as anything further develops I will post about it. Right now Bob is concentrating on getting the parts delivery to be timely, but I expect he will turn to the subject of tubes before long.
Just about everyone is going for the 120's, but he will bring some of the other two types you mention, for those who, for whatever reason, want less power. Generally 6550s and KT-88s are priced about the same, as I remember, and have about the same power.

Do we know if upgrading the KT88s to KT120s is a drop in replacement
or if a modification to the tube socket wiring will be required?

early in the Inception, it was going to require no wiring changes, just a bias adjustment if I remember correctly. Is this the case, Robert?

It's a drop-in replacement for KT-88 to KT-120. Might need a small bias adjustment; but otherwise I'm pretty sure you can swap for the higher output tubes without any major modifications.
