Making a Mess at the tinpan Ranch.....

Post by TNRabbit » Sun Jan 29, 2012 10:00 pm

I had an opportunity to deliver a couple of CarverFest Amps to a friend & fellow member, tinpan, today. Wow. What a place & what a ton of tubed stuff!

We proceeded to take apart most of his systems & try everything will the CF amps; thanks for letting me destroy your setup, Robin!

I'm certain he'll post pics later, and maybe even a video~

BTW, the CF amps sounded FANTASTIC~

Yes, Rabbit came over and we had a grand old time. We had speakers moving all over the place and we moved all over the place checking out the different systems.

Image
The first place we started was here. My Audio Note Interstage Mono blocks driving the A7's. Gary was quick to point out the lack of bass and highs. As a 2 way system, and I moved my Sub off this system to another, all you get is the sw33test midrange and mid bass. I moved these speakers and it really messed up the sw33t spot, you had to sit in one spot to hear it and if you moved 2 inches left or right you missed it. . It wasn't until Rabbit left that I toed them back out a little and restored it back to normal. You would think with speakers as big as these that you wouldn't have issues missing the sweet spot. I admit, I am a little neurotic about 2 things, moving speakers around and adjusting the shelves on my amp stands. They never look perfect. I moved the table that housed my TT and moved the media server away from the system to de-clutter a little. It looks much better. Now, I just need to save of for a sub for this system and it will be complete again.

Image
Although we didn't listen to it, ran out of time, here's my new TT, a Sota Comet. Man it is really nice

Image
Here's a non artistic shot of it

Image
And a better shot of the de-cluttering

Image
Next up we listened to a little 5.1 surround sound on some DVD's. We watched and listened to Jeff Beck and Cowboy Junkies.

Image
That was on the Sunfire Theater Grand IV and Cinema Grand Sig 400 x 5. I am driving Klipsch La Scalas for fronts and Corwalls for surround. My next little project will be to move the two audio stands off this wall to give the speakers a little more breathing room. I hate having them all jammed in there. If I didn't like the La Scalas so much I'd replace them with the Sunfire ribbons. That way the Lowthers would have enough room. Ahhh well

Image
Rabbit, of course, showed up with his eq shirt

Image
And played a little banjo

Image
Then we moved onto the bedroom system, my AN 300b Kit 1 driving Lowther PM5a equiped Medallions. I need a sub here as well to complete this system. I added an AN DAC2.1

Now it was time to unveil these little beauties. After checking them on some small speakers we hooked them up to the Khorns. I thought they sounded great, the bass was a little muddled though if you pushed the amps too far. Still, a keeper config.

Image
Then we wheeled in the Klipsch Epic CF-3's. These are a 2 way design and you can bi amp them. That's the way I ran them on the Sunfire amp. Again, these amps sounded great on these speakers. Lot's of nice clean bass.

Image
Next up was the Lowther PM6a drivers Medallions. As I mentioned, they leak sand everywhere. The Carverfest amps sounds great on these. More than enough power to properly drive them. I love single drivers

Image
Finally we moved the amps to the main listening room, I replaced the 300b push pull amp I had in there with the Carver fest amps. I have an AN L2 preamp with phono stage, AN Dac 2.1, the Carverfest amps, a Rythmik 15 inch sub and the Lowther Allerions with DX 65 drivers. This is now an incredible detailed system and I think Rabbit enjoyed it quite a bit. Don't know why, I just love the sound that comes out of single driver speakers

Image
Here's a nice clean shot of these little beauties

Image
Left amp, still have to put the covers on

Image
And the right amp.

It was an incredibly fun day, we jammed a lot into 5 hours and if you want to see the shirt in action you'll have to check out the video in Gary's build thread
