Surround Sound Speaker/Amp related Question

Post by elgrau » Sat Jan 26, 2013 9:41 pm

Here's a surround sound (SS) related question: I'd like to also use my EPI-1000 stereo speakers for the two front channels of SS, but don't want to use my stereo amp/preamp to drive them. So can I (safely) connect these 8 ohm speakers to BOTH (i.e., simultaneously) my TFM-42 AND my AV-705x and then only power up one or the other depending on whether or not I'm doing SS for movies or just listening to stereo music? And if this is safe/ok, would it do any harm to either amp if accidentally both amps were powered up at the same time? And don't suggest A-B switch: I'd like to avoid that complexity/extra connections, etc.!
Thanks for any info/help! - Ed

no, do not hook up two amps two one speaker. it will hurt the amps. i do have a set of a/b toggle switches i used in the stereo shop to a/off/b sub woofers , to show between sealed and ported, etc, etc. . so two are needed. that would be the only safe way so there is no chance of the outputs ever connecting. 30 shipped.

Thanks, angel. Perhaps a pic and some more details (connections, etc.) on how I'd use the two toggle switches to achieve the results I want and I may be interested in them... - Ed

I've read connecting 2 amps to the same speakers (without a switch) is a huge no no, basically no way to stop one from bleeding into the other even if one is turned off.

What are you planning on driving them with if not your preamp? You can run your 42 full time for the fronts and only use 3 channels of the 705 for your center and rears.

Yep that's what I'm currently doing, but no likey because it's just too many things to turn on/set/buttons to push. I want to simply turn on the AV-705x and GO with full SS thru the five speakers (two of which are common to both the SS and stereo systems). If I cannot figure out a way to (safely) hook the 1000's to both the TFM-42 and the AV-705x, then I either have to live with the current setup or place two more speakers on top of the 1000's and use these just for SS...I really don't like either of these arrangements...hence the need to to hook the 1000's up to BOTH these amps. I guess if I have to, I'll use an A/B switch arrangement, but won't like it...
