SD/A-450 cd player skips

My SD/A-450 cd player occasionally skips. Cleaning the laser pickup lens didn't help. Anyone have any experience with this and what can be done about it?

Has the belt on the transport been replaced? I don't know much about cd players but I do know the belts over time will ware out.

Did you get it shipped to you recently? Or, have you had this for a while and it just started? There are a few adjustments you can fiddle with. Very tricky task without proper test equipment though.

Re: SD/A-450 cd player skips

When you said that you cleaned the lens how did you clean it and what did you clean it with? The reason I ask is the lens cleaning kits you buy are about as useful as wearing socks in the shower. Our SDA-490t cd player developed a slight skip issue where it became sensitive to movement of the floor and it just decided not to like certain discs. I decided to try a good clean before sending it to Mr. Carver. I pulled the lid and cleaned the lens with a Q-tip with a couple drops of rubbing alcohol on it, I then dried the lens with a some air duster in a can. I am happy to say that our 490t has not skipped once since! You may want to try this because I do believe the SDA-450t is the same player as the 490t except the 450 does not have the tube output...... Just a thought..

I'm not sure if it uses a belt or gearset to drive the pickup. I got it for cheap on Ebay a couple years ago because the belt that opens the door was crapped out. I looked for a belt kit for it then and couldn't find one (found belts for every other model though)-- I whittled a door belt out of an old bicycle tube and that part's been working fine ever since. I will open it up and see if it has a belt driving the pickup. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the post Rainman but, yes, I did use alchohol and a Q-tip.

Jazz, good luck with getting your cdp back on track. If you decide to get rid of it rather than repair it, I'd be interested in acquiring it from you to have as a parts unit. :)

Hello Jazzman53, your best bet at this point would be to send it to High-Tech Audio. Rolland will get that baby back in running order as good as back to new spec's. He comes highly recommended and does a very thorough job in restoring the unit.
In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence.

The best way to enjoy digital music reproduction is to never listen to a good analogue reproduction.

Sometimes this thing will play through a whole cd without skipping so I'm not ready to junk it just yet. In fact, I just finished recapping my amps and preamp (my first ever electronics refurb) and love their improved dynamics so much that yesterday I ordered new caps for every remaining piece of equipment I own, including my two carver cd players (got a DTL-100 too). I'm looking for a Service Manual for the 450 to see if I can do anything with it but if I can't get er' fixed, I'll send it to Roland.

Re: SD/A-450 cd player skips

Update:
As part of my complete system refurb project, I just replaced all of the electrolytic caps in this cd player except for a couple of tiny ones on the laser pickup assembly, which I was afraid to mess with. Even if I had a schematic for this thing, I still wouldn't know enough to judge what effect, if any, replacing the caps might have on tracking (and the intermittent skipping problem). The skipping problem is (or was?) intermittent so it still may be there but I've been playing cd's on this thing much of the day and [surprisingly] it hasn't skipped once. Knock on wood [-o<

Re: SD/A-450 cd player skips

Final Update:
It's been a week since the recap and it hasn't skipped once. I can't explain it, as I didn't attempt any tracking adjustments, just replaced the caps. I guess I just got lucky but I'm gonna call it fixed. \:D/
