Re: Sunfire Tube pre dilemma

You are all welcome.

I love it when the solution, to what looks like a big problem, is so simple.

Thanks to Eddie for the phonoboard installation manual. My kind of manual, essentially no writing, just pictures.

Yes, but not quite as helpful after the fact.

Still, nice to have for future reference and to assist others. :D

Re: Sunfire Tube pre dilemma

Yes Tom, now that you have a working phono it is time to mod it ala Bob Carver.

Bob was willing to share his latest mod. BrianT has the details.

It is not in my schedule right now, so I am counting on you to accomplish it and tell us how long it took, and describe the sonic differences.

Oh, it just occurred to me, if you are not using a MC phono cartridge there is no need for most of the mod, other than the final resistor changes.

Bruce

After a closer look at the mod and the schematic, unless one is using a MC cartridge, there are no mods to do.

That "final" resistor, is NOT a final resistor in the audio chain, as I thought. It is R57, located at the far end of the board from the input tubes. With the mod there are a whole glob of resistors in parallel with the original 3.3 ohm, 5 watt resistor in the filament supply. I am sure it is necessary to support the two additional MC tubes.

Bottom line. If you are using a MM cartridge there is no work to do. :D

Re: Sunfire Tube pre dilemma

Bruce.

The mod Bob did, is only for MC, as that's what I use.
