In about 1982 one of the very best pre-preamps/head amps was the Counterpoint SA-2. It used 4 6DJ8/6922 tubes, not unlike Bob's mod. But it also used 3 more tubes for regulation, and rectification. As good as it could sound, it was some what unreliable. It took a lot of work keeping it working well, unlike Bob's designs.
Most audiophiles agree that an active head amp (especially tubes) is much more musical and involving than even the best step-up transformers.
