Tfm-25 not working....

Post by bonzo4ever » Sat Dec 18, 2010 9:54 pm

Greetings!!! I bought my ex-brother in laws system a few years back. A tfm 25, with a ct-6 pre-amp and a sd/a350 cd player. Gave 300 for the whole shebang, which I thought was sweet. Anywho, the tfm 25 died on me. When I power it up, the meters max out, it clicks, then nothing. I'm sure it could be a million things, and I'm not to electronic savvy. Maybe this is common. Unsure. Thanks for the help and carver makes the best gear out there! Thanks again... rob

Depending on the cosmetic looks of your unit and how attached you may be to it with the cost of refurbishing is the question? It could run around $375.00 for a total rebuild, but then again you have a unit "like new" and with Rita you could also request Mr. Carvers signature as he stops in there often. Or, you could consider purchasing another unit? > Like this one >

Or, if your considering upgrading to a more current unit, well don't want to scare you off just yet,

I've got one on eBay right now for $300 plus shipping that's in pretty good shape and works perfect if you just want to replace it.

jjptkd has sold some item's to forum members and has an excellent history with members here. You can trust him with this. $299.00 buy it now is a great price. Something to consider for sure. Cheaper that sending your unit in for repair.

I'm hoping that it can be repaired. I wasn't sure if the problem was a common one. Clicking, then nothing after power up . Could it be in a protect mode? I'm not sure where to start. If I have to spend big money to fix it, I'll just buy another one.

Look in Charlotte and see if you can find a reputable repair shop to give you an estimate on it. I don't know of any shops there, but that's where I'd start looking if you want to avoid a $400 trip to Rita or Rolland.
In reality, it only matters what it sounds like to YOU!!!

There is something to consider about rebuild vs. replace. If you just buy another one you will likely have problems with the replacement simply due to the age of some of the internal components. Things like capacitors only last so long and buying another one will eventually put you in the same spot you are now. If your existing unit is in good shape and has served you well I would consider sending it in and spending the money to have it rebuilt/repaired. By having it rebuilt all of the parts which typically wear out such as capacitors will be brand new and you will have a unit that should be good to go for another 20 years.
A replacement unit is going to be close to the same age as yours and will likely soon be at point where it will need things like the capacitors replaced simply due to age. So keep this in mind because it can be a bummer if you spend the coin for a replacement and 2 months later have to spend a chunk to have that one serviced too.....

Well put rainman, I started thinking about buying another, and it seemed to make more sense to fix my old one. At least then I know what I've got. Thanks for the ideas guys.. Rob
