Wiring question

Have a question about wiring speakers in Parallel. Can speakers be wired by putting the pos lead to the first speaker and running a wire from speaker 1 to the pos terminal on speaker 2 while doing the same with the ground? In other words all of the pos to pos and ground to ground then connecting the leads from the amp to the last set of speaker spades. Or do I have to run separate leads to all spades.

Hey Ray,

It looks cleaner when going from speaker to speaker rather than from one terminal to each speaker. We asked Bob that same question while he was down here in FL before CarverFest. If you decide to run individual wires from each speaker to the terminals, keep in mind the resistance of the wire, we first used 22 ga wire and had a .3 ohm resistance in just the wire! You wouldn't believe the difference it made going from 22 ga wire to 20 ga wire?

Assuming they're the same type speaker, you'll cut the impedance in half that way (two 8 ohm will become 4 ohm).

The wiring is for my silvers, I got a wild hair last night and started looking at diagrams of speaker wiring and noticed none of the pictures showed the wires going to the spades as mentioned in the original post. Thanks for all the help.

The impedance will depend on exactly how you wire them- here is a good link to help explain the various ways:

Series Parallel is what you want in order to keep the impedance the same as the crossovers were designed for.

Almost ALL multiple-speaker systems are wired in a series of parallel runs. However, since the SIlvers are an odd-number (3), they are wired in parallel, out of phase to the crossover.

Details:

The Silver series Amazings have three, 16 ohm, 12" woofers. There are several iterations of the CROSSOVER, however; the main being the T or CT version. They are wired together in parallel to produce a (approx) 4 ohm load. If they were the more conventional 8 ohm woofers, they would represent a 2 ohm load which would present a tremendously difficult load. The crossover ties the ribbon/woofers together to give you an approximate 8 ohm load overall.

So, to recap, you need to wire the woofers in parallel out of phase with the crossover, and the ribbon in phase with the crossover. The phase differences are addressed within the crossover.

Now that I think about it...they may be closer to 6 ohms....of course it's all relative as it changes with frequency & temperature.

After doing a lot of reading and research today it appears that the correct way to wire a pair of silvers is to use 12 gauge wire and the three subwoofers should be wired out of phase with the ribbon and in parallel. Anyone have any more things I should look out for? And thanks for all the help.

Could someone tell me where the neg wire on the silver ribbon is connected? is it directly to the neg terminal on the amp connections or is it connected to a spade on a woofer. Thanks.

I think only the Silver CT-type woofers are wired out of phase with the ribbon. The non-CT type are not.
