Today target species Mahi Mahi

Post by Don » Fri Aug 11, 2017 5:15 pm

Ocean finally calmed down to venture offshore in the blue water. We got into Mahi Mahi schoolies. They are a fun fish to catch but doesn't compare in table fare to snapper IMHO. Therefore a catch and release day. Besides they were on the small side. However a very colorful fish. Here is a picture of one just before boating and release. Also released several other species including this small blackfin tuna. Not a fan of tunafish either.
Will see what tomorrow brings. Matt and Ashley coming in tonight. Will see what they wish to do.

Nice pictures, Don. That water is really dark blue. I didn't know that snapper was much better table fare than mahi-mahi.
Many restaurants serve both. Good to know.

Bob

Yep snapper is much better. Doesn't have that strong fish flavor and a much whiter meat. The Maui Mahi was caught in the Gulfstream in about 700 ft of water. Whereas the blackfin tuna was caught in about 200 feet. Big difference in color of water.

Try the Mahi Mahi blackened. It's damn good and doesn't taste fishy. I'll send you Paul Prudhomes recipe if you want.
