Carver M1.5t Power Amplifier

I had the pleasure of owning a completely reconditioned M1.5t amp last year for a short while, before OCCD completely took over and I spent thousands replacing it with all Sunfire gear....but that's another story.

Realize the specifications for the M1.5t and M1.5 are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. The standard had a soft clip feature built in and because of that didn't approach the massive power output capability of the t mod unit.

Back to the M1.5t. At the time I owned this unit, it was the most powerful amplifier I'd ever experienced. Although it can't be bridged, Bob didn't think that was necessary since it carries a reserve of up to 600 watts per channel with the ability to "steer" to one or the other channel up to a maximum of 750 watts, provided a 1200 watt maximum total isn't met. That, ladies & gentlemen, is a TON of power from a very small package. I could literally kick off the circuit breaker in my house without hitting the yellow lights on the front of the amp! You can absolutely destroy lesser speakers with this amp, as in welding voice coils together & letting out the "magic smoke."

I only have two real criticisms of this amp:

1) You get a lot of electrical "talk" through the speakers when you power the amp up and down. Thumps, pops, "fffffft" (granny farts), etc. to combat this, I always powered the amp up first in my system and down last after letting the capacitors discharge a little.

2) To my ears, the bass sounded "muddy", most likely due to the "t mod" function. I much prefer the solid, growling, bass of a solid state amp. This boils down to personal preference.

Overall, an exceptional powerhouse of an amp with good sound. Be aware that used models are now reaching the age where the capacitors & other parts have most likely approached the end of their useful life span. It's best to get a PROPERLY reconditioned unit and save yourself a lot of headaches later.

I have a 1.5t that has never been rebuilt, and sounds great. I know it will have to be recapped soon, but I would recomend this amp to any one looking for a amp to drive any speaker.

I just had mine refurbished by Rolland and it's on the way back to me... I can't wait to hear it again!

I still have my old owners manual if anyone ever needs some shots from it! I also have the article where Bob Caver did the t mods to the old M1.5.

A couple of days before I got my TFM55 I went and looked at a m1.5t and did not buy it because of the turn off POW, I just did not think my Apogees would like that

What was the cost if I may ask? My caps look good but eventually will need to be replaced.

I recently picked up an M 1.5t on eBay and it sounds GREAT with my 901s VI and I dont find the bass 'muddy' at all. The 1.5t was, afterall, a copy of the ML2 which is a solid state amp not a tube. It never seems to run out of power even when listening to J. McVie on old Peter Green FM and Mel Shrackner of GFR - some heavy Fender bass.
