You might want to call around your local plastic supply shops and grab yourself a small spray bottle of this stuff for cleaning the face.
I dono what you used before, but be carefull what you use on the plastic parts. NEVER use Windex !!!

Get the blue spray bottle, it's pretty cheap too.



It also works GREAT on the anodized aluminum surfaces, and will not discolor the finish at all.
Plastics, Automotive paint finishes, glass, metals... damn near anything that has a fragile surface finish.

i did a few trials and it looks like i am going to have to run the tfm-35 on my center channel to get the desired result i was looking for, i guess the sony amp really is discrete, it just cant push the center like i want it to.

anyway i had a few friends over and we listened to a 5.1 mix of NIN Year Zero, and it blew all of us away.

now my problem is i believe referred to as OCCD.

i want another to put on my mains.

toy maker, thanks for the advice on the novus, until now i was just using an undershirt with no product.

so for now, I've decided to build my own 12v switched outlet.
as i'm an electrician of sorts at the moment, i can get some parts from work, this one, however i had to purchase, and looking at it makes me happy :P


i also picked up a snap in nice looking 3.5mm jack as all the ones i had that were panel mount had a nut on the front and looked bad.

going to put together a working model first and then find a nice enclosure to put it in.


as the relay was the biggest solid state one they stocked, and its rated up to 50 amps, this should offer no resistance and not affect my audio at all

yes bill. My Sony receiver has a 12v trigger out.

Turns out mine doesn't work as advertised. So, I'm getting an advance exchange with Sony. Hopefully this new one will work correctly.

I'll probably just start with this relay controlling a duplex outlet in a box. Will keep posting updates.

I have a Belkin power conditioner that has both a 12v trigger input and a 120v trigger (from a switched outlet on a piece of gear). My Sunfire TGP-III has a 12v trigger out and the SUnfire 400 ~ seven has a trigger input and a pass through. So I have the TGP-III in one of the unswitched outlets on the Belkin. The remote turns it on, it turns on the 400 ~ seven via its trigger input and the 400 ~ seven passes it through to the Belkin that turns on the rest of the switched components.

Yeah that's what I'm looking for as an end goal. I didn't want to spend the green on a heavy duty conditioner as you have to spend 250 for the smallest model.

They sell nice looking switched outlets but they are usually rated a 5-10 amps. And are light duty.
I'm basically just making a switched outlet very heavy duty.


That's a good idea to have a 12v passthrough! I'll have to do that. It will only cost a couple bucks to add that feature.

put together a mockup tonight



it functions exactly as desired with the exception of a software glitch on my sony receiver. it doesn't control the 12v signal correctly. i picked up some 12/3 cable rated for 300v. probably replace this later with some rated for 600v just for kicks. and a 20a duplex receptacle lexicon brand, also probably replace this with Hubbell brand hospital grade.

luckily i've got a replacement arriving probably monday from sony.

now i just need to figure out how i want to house this thing.

the relay suggests a heat sink capable of 1C°/Watt at maximum rating, now i wont be running anywhere near its maximum rating of 50A or 250V, and it does have an aluminum block built as the back of the relay, but i do want the enclosure i use to have some heat dispersion abilities. i have a few old CPU Heatsinks that i may put to use on this project depending on the enclosure i choose. i dont expect this thing to make much heat running one tfm35, but i do want it to be future proof. i'm trying to get another tfm35 or 45 depending on if i can find a good deal. and maybe eventually i'll expand this into a larger project.

anyway i'm pretty excited this is working as planned, and can't wait to get it assembled into an enclosure.

ok so i convinced sony to replace my receiver and to my joy they gave me a one model year upgrade for free

while this new receiver does have switched outlets, i'm not about to run an amp through one of them.

i've got my little 12v switched outlet installed and it seemed to be working fine although now i have moved it around a bit and hooked it up to the new receiver and when it powers up the outlet and the amp turns on, the amp makes a strange vibrating sound. after hearing this twice and then a third time that lasted longer, i have taken the switched outlet out of service.

then i had to go to work, and i've just now gotten home, so i haven't been able to trouble shoot anything yet. oiy frustrating.

any thoughts on what the sound could be? the first two or so times it was a short sound maybe 1-1.5 seconds and the last time was kind of long maybe 3-5 seconds.

Sure sounds like a power surge with the outlet turning on/off. I don't know is having a outlet turning on from a relay is such a good idea? I'm not an electrician but stevewithrow one of our members is. I wonder what he would think of this set up? Maybe PM him and have him reply to this post, would like to see what he says about this. Well, I can't say for sure. What I'd do is test the relay. Trigger it with your receiver and see what the resistance is across the outputs (hopefully zero). You have it wired on the hot lead, don't you?

i'll run that test tonight bill, yes i have it wired on the hot lead, the neutral goes straight to the outlet.

the relay has a really nice looking green led that was working and now it doesn't. i'm afraid i may have accidentally hooked the ac to the dc side, and the dc to the ac side during one of my attempts to assemble it in this box i got for it. if thats the case i may have messed up the relay? i'm pretty new when it comes to relays.

Wiring it wrong (i.e., ac to dc) would probably be fatal (certainly with a non-digital one, it would be, as you'd blow out the coil to the electromagnet). With a digital one, it might have a protector circuit.

it is a solid state relay so maybe it does have a protector, but maybe i fubared the led and the snubber its supposed to have.
