Wardsweb says Hello There

I use to hang on the old Carver forums years ago but was only lurking here until today. Many of you may already know me, as I've been around audio since a child and the internet for over a decade.

You could say I've had my share of Carver amps. Here is a list of ones rolled through my system to drive my electrostats.

Carver m1.5t
solid state stereo amp
350 wpc into 8
Clip this one even at medium levels

Carver TFM-35
solid state stereo
250 wpc into 8, 400 into 4, 750 into 2
Could clip this one when pushed hard

Carver A-500x
solid state stereo
250 wpc into 8, 400 into 4, 750 into 2
current limited at 2 ohm
Didn't clip but wasn't comfortable with the meter swings

Carver A-760x
solid state stereo
380 wpc into 8, 600 into 4, 1150 into 2
current limited at 1 ohm
walk in the park, effortless

Carver Silver 7t amps
solid state mono blocks
575 wpc into 8 ohms, 900 wpc into 4, 1000 into 2
current limited at 1 ohm
amp idled most of the time, piece of cake

I still own the Silver 7t's but all the others are gone.

Welcome back Wardsweb!!! From your post, it was easier to clip the M-1.5 than the TFM-35...interesting...

It's no wonder that the A-760x had no trouble driving most anything you can put at it. I have an opened up A-500x on my workbench, which shares the same amp cards as the A-760x, but is somewhat depopulated of output devices. The A-500x has a pair of parallel output devices for the positive and negative side of each channel. The A-760x has FIVE!

One of the things I don't like about the A-series is that they are strident in the midrange and heavy in the bass. Not boomy bass, just a little more emphasis than I think is right for overall balance.

Well bass boost in a bass lacking speaker like the CLS is a good thing.

Welcome Wardsweb. I have been following your audio journey for some time now. Talked to you a few times on various forums but never this one. Even planned on making it down to your pad to listen to some gear until the economy went belly up.
