allow me to introduce myself

Post by debassige » Tue Nov 17, 2009 8:48 pm

Well like many I've found this forum because of the purchasing of a piece of Carver gear, an M-400. I'll post many questions but I thought I'd introduce myself first. I'm electronically challenged. I'm fairly new to the audio world and besides the M-400 I have no other Carver pieces (yet). I purchased the 400 to power a set of Infinity Kappas and AR90's, a good choice? I will attempt to be a contributing member of this forum in any way un-electronically possible. I'm also a member of Audiokarma (hope this is OK). I will eventually get around to creating a profile, signature and avatar

Thanks

Welcome to Carver.
AR90's, a good choice?
Indeed.

Are those Kappa 9s? If so, that ain't enough amp. Kappa 9s are amp killers, and you need a high wattage amp with LOTS of current, because those Kappas drop to around 1 Ohm at certain frequencies. Something like a Sunfire 300x2 that's pretty much load invariant would do.

The AR90s are no easy speaker to drive either. They are 4 Ohm and want at least 150 Watts/channel. If you want them to get loud, you'll probably clip your M-400, which will burn up the tweeters in your ARs pretty fast. I did that to a pair of AR3a speakers.

You might want to use that M-400 on something a little easier to drive. It's still a great amp (I have two of them).

They are actually Kappa 7's so not the amp killers the 9's are. The last thing I want to do is damage my AR90's (I just refoamed them), I do have a pair of DQ-10's as well so I'm pretty sure I'll be able to match up something with my new amp, if not then the hunt will be on for yet another pair of speakers  .

M-400 will drive the DQ-10s.

Welcome to the forum!!! =D> 8) =D> ...that M-400 will be sufficient for the DQ-10's.
In reality, it only matters what it sounds like to YOU!!!
